Should I tell the kids sooner?

Hi! I have 5 kids (15, 13, 11, 8, 6). They think we are going to Disney in February, but we secretly changed the trip to December 1-14, with lots of extras like MVMCP, CP package, etc.

My daughters are dancing in the Nutcracker this year, and I wanted to wait to see if they got a part. If they did, I thought it would be good to wait until after, so they don't get too wound up about it. We leave 2 days after the performances.

The only problem with this plan is that my 13 year old son is on a basketball team that has its playoffs the week we leave, so he will probably miss some games. My DH thinks we may need to tell them earlier so he is prepared.

Do you think we should?

I too think you need to tell then now. That age kids have a lot going on that they need to take care of in thier own way. That's a busy time of year too.

Is there any way that you could just notify his coach ahead of time? Maybe that would work? While I agree that it is harder as they get older, you are so close and this probably will be the very last time you get a chance to surprise them all like this, so I say try really really hard to keep the secret, and just let the coach know it is a secret! Good luck!
