I just got back from my holiday and very nearly signed for about 200 points. But went away and compared official dvc to resale. The cost difference is significant. Is there any reason NOT to buy as a resale.... it seems like ill just be ripped off if i buy straight from the vacation club.

Thanks

I am not 100% sure of all the whys and wherefores but there are certain things you cannot do with your points if you buy resale (wef March this year, I believe) - I'm fairly certain that points purchased via resale cannot be used for stays at Disney resorts other than DVC or some of the other Disney (and non-Disney resort) collections.

I agree, though, the price difference is large and resale is worth serious consideration at the moment. I suppose it all really comes down to whether you would purely want to use your points for DVC resort stays at WDW/GCV or whether you would want to be able to use them for other things.

ETA: I found a quote on the Members website which mentions specifically the rules regarding resale: "Under the new policy, Members who purchase from anyone other than Disney Vacation Development, Inc., on or after March 21, 2011, will not be eligible to use those Vacation Points to make reservations within the Concierge Collection, the Disney Collection or the Adventurer Collection. Those Vacation Points will instead be valid only for reservations at Disney Vacation Club resorts, as well as for RCI® exchanges, Club Cordial and Club Intrawest."

Resale purchasers are not allowed to use the Disney, Concierge, and Adventurers collection.

That means that you cannot trade out to non-DVC Disney resorts and cruises, upscale hotels that are mostly in the U.S., but also includes 1 hotel in London, as well as Adventures by Disney.

You can use your points at any of the DVC resorts AND make RCI exchanges, and the trades from the Buena Vista trading company.

So...through DVC you can go to Walt Disney World in Fl., Disneyland in CA., Hilton Head Island SC, Vero Beach FL., and Hawaii. Through RCI / BVTC-- you can visit other time shares all over the world including much of Europe.

Where can you not go?
Here are some examples:
Disney Collection
Disneyland Paris resorts (although there may be some RCI exchanges nearby)
Non-DVC resorts at WDW such as:
Grand Floridian
Polynesian Resort
Port Orleans Resort
Coronado Springs Resort
Disney Cruise Line
Concierge Collection
Grove Park Inn -- Asheville, NC
Mandarin Oriental -- Washington DC
Whitehall Hotel -- Chicago, IL
Royal Garden Hotel -- London, UK

Adventurers Collection
...any of the Adventures by Disney

Keep in mind that trades use a lot more points than staying at DVC resorts. The best value of DVC is stay at the DVC resorts.

If you look at using DVC for that purpose...then purchase resale.

With that said...it is much easier to recommend purchasing resale to someone who lives in the U.S., and can easily get to the DVC resorts.
