Yes, because the Droid cannot do what an iPhone does or even come close to it, in my opinion. :)

What can a Droid* not do?

*Droid is copyrighted property of Lucasfilms inc.

It is my understanding that it does not have the same capabilities as an iPhone and the OS is not as easy to use. You'll have to ask someone who is more knowledgeable than me though.

And there's your marketing machine at work.

I'm not saying everyone that buys an iPhone fell for an advertising scheme, but let's face it, no one's lining up overnight to buy a Motorola Droid. :)

Are you saying that all of the people that lined up for an iphone are victims of advertising or are you saying that people have realized that the Motorola Droid isnt as good as an iphone?

Helping the OP make an informed decision, one that is a very costly one in the end, was my reason for posting here. Considering all of the choices then ultimately making the decision that's right for you is a personal one that should not be criticized.

Who criticized anyone?

The OP asked opinions on the iPhone. She didnt ask which smart phone was better.

I've re-read this thread and find that many people have opinions. The only bias I have found is this statement.... "I don't like the fact that His Highness Jobbs has to "approve" what I want on MY phone."

My oldest daughter and her husband have Droids. They wouldn't switch for the world. They feel it is a superior phone. To each his own in your phone choice. They are thrilled with their phone like I am with my iPhone. So which opinion is correct?

The reality is that most people are going to pick one phone for whatever reason and be happy with it, having never really tried the alternatives. I love my iPhone. I have absolutely no idea if I would love a Droid just as much, not as much or a lot more.

I do know, to speak to Disney Dad's point, that Apple excels at marketing. I don't see any Droid store in the mall where I can walk in and spend as much time as I'd like checking out their product and actually putting it through it's paces while surrounded by employees prepared to answer my every question.

Even if the Droid does do all that the iPhone does, I'd probably still pick the iPhone because of the support system behind it. Personally, I'd pick the iPhone anyway because we've been Mac users at home since 1994 and having a portable device that seamlessly integrates with our home computer is a nice bonus.

And there's your marketing machine at work.

Explain please.

I'm going by word of mouth from people who have either owned a Droid or have friends that do. The last I remember Apple wasn't putting out an ad against the Droid. If so, I've never seen it.

OP, if you have crappy reception in your area, don't get it.

It's a fine gadget, but I very much regret getting it because it doesn't work at all or it drops calls.

It's fine if it works in your area, but if it doesn't, it just sucks so much.

My Mom came up with her Iphone yesterday and I made several calls and walked around my entire house and it reception was perfect. It seems they've cleared up the problems I experienced years ago.
I followed with a visit to the AT&T store-they were able to add me to my Moms plan, so my add a line is $10 (she did have to upgrade from an individual plan to a family plan, we now get 550 shared minutes versus her 400 individual minutes which also increased her plan about $10) and I am trying the $15 200 MB data package - if that's not enough I will upgrade to the 2G package.
I was surprised that they had the 16G iphone 4 in stock and walked out with my new iphone.
DH (who was the one really questioning if I needed this phone) & I immediately left for a Cubs-Brewers game. I didn't bring my camera (wouldn't have even thought about it) but was able to take pictures with my iphone and email them to my Mom who was babysitting. I also videod the drunk next to us almost falling over the railing at Miller Park. And I got turn by turn directions on the way home where we always manage to get lost. DH may be a little impressed. ;)

Thanks for all the input. I had my mind made up that i wanted an iphone, I was looking for reassurance that It would be useful beyond just a cool, new gadget.

Congrats on the new phone. You won't regret the purchase.

I had the same concern as you, that it would be a cool but costly gadget. It has been anything but. I use it every day in countless practical, as well as fun, ways. We like to travel and being able to pull up a street map no matter where I happen to find myself is incredibly useful. I always keep a road atlas in the car but it doesn't go to street level which is where we tend to get lost.

Accessing e-mail on the go is far more useful than I had anticipated.

I'm a physician and have gotten a few medical apps that I use daily at work.

And I can't tell you how many times I've been in a meeting or even a casual conversation and a question came up and I was able to instantly answer it by searching Google on my phone.

I've used the camera for routine photos but also for practical stuff, like photographing a document I needed to be able to refer to later or had to send someone else a copy of so I just took a picture and e-mailed or texted the photo.

Enjoy the new phone!

Thanks! And I'm enjoying browsing the boards via e-ticket!

I had a Blackberry that I loved. I didn't think there was anything better. Then work gave me an iPhone. I didn't like typing on it for the first few weeks. But you couldn't pry the iPhone away from me now. I don't know how I lived without it.

Very, very true. I've been an Apple fan for a long time, but up until 3 years ago, used a Blackberry, or Palm device for work. Once getting an iPhone, the ONLY reason I still used a blackberry, was for our office e-mail, which was Lotus Notes. A few months ago, we installed a Notes connector for iPhone, and I have completely ditched any other device, now, for both personal, AND work related reasons.

The iPhone is an amazing tool, for a home user, or pro. I'm in IT, and frankly, I don't know how I survived without one before, LOL.

I also agree on the typing. I hated it at first, but after a few weeks of use, it became second nature, like most things do.
