Should I get an Iphone?

I am really going back & forth over this decision and could use the input of others who have an iphone.

I currently have virgin mobile - 100 min for $15. I rarely use all my minutes.

Since getting an itouch I've been thinking the iphone could be a viable option for me with the exception of the call plan pricing. I perceive that I would use it to keep in touch with emails (nothing urgent as I'm a stay at home Mom), GPS features (don't have one in the car), tracking my Weight Watchers points (love that app), checking the DISboards, in addition to the calendar/organizer app I already use on the itouch. It would just be nice to have access to the internet on the go.

It recently occurred to me that my Mom has an AT&T plan and she checked to see if I could be on a family plan with her - the answer is Yes! SO I could add a line for $10 (sharing 550 mins which would be fine) and then add the data for the iphone ($15 for the 200mb).

I had AT&T in the past and had spotty reception at home (neighbors said this is still the case). We do not have a wifi router so would likely need to add that if I want to use it on wifi at home.

The main thing I keep going over is it seems silly for someone who uses under 100 mins a month to have a $200 phone!
Second, would the 200mb be enough data for me? I would addictive check E-ticket if I had access to it all the time!

Every time I think I'm ready to do it, I hesitate again.

Any advise or things I should consider in making my decision.

I bought the iPhone over the iTouch because I needed a phone but more importantly needed web and email access for my business. I do use it more and more for texting now, but internet access thru AT&T (not having to rely on finding a WiFi spot) is key for me. I also use the camera exclusively now rather than my digital camera. So for me, it's been combining 3 devices into 1 - especially great for travel!

I have no idea what I did before getting one. Obviously, I survived, but I *heart* mine!!! It really has just about everything you would ever need on one device.


You could sell your touch and get a few bucks out of that, since you really won't need it anymore. You could also get the 3GS which could save you a few $$, unless you have to have the 4. I think ATT has the 8g 3GS for $99. I have the 3GS and have no need or want to get the 4....LOVE IT!!

It took me five weeks to decide whether or not an iPhone was right for me. There was a thread with hundreds of replies. I honestly think I asked every question possible. I've never looked back. I could not live without my iPhone today. I don't talk on the phone that much either (others would argue lol), but you are not getting it solely for the phone feature. It is honestly like having a PC in your pocket. It's INCREDIBLE and you won't be sorry. It's worth every dime!

Same here. I pay $100 for 900 minutes for a year on my Tracfone. After a year, I still have most of the minutes.

It is honestly like having a PC in your pocket.

This is the truth! The "smart phones" are really mini-computers.
If you can't piggy-back with your mother's plan, are you willing to pay $850 or so every year to have a computer in your pocket?

I am coming close to getting a iTouch. It is "free" with my new bank account. Maybe this will be my "test for an iPhone" gadget?

Lyn, I can't look at it that way (i.e. $850/year). That'd convince anyone not to get an iPhone without them knowing what an amazing device it is.

I personally can't see the sense in anyone getting an iTouch when there's such a thing as a an iPhone. In my opinion, why bother getting half of the prime real estate the iPhone offers? You have Internet access everywhere, not just on WiFi like on the iTouch, and it is a fully functional phone, camera, etc. I have many friends at work who have iTouches and wish they just bought the iPhone instead.

I don't believe the original poster will be able to just add $15/month to piggy-back off of a family plan for an iPhone. I do not have a family plan, but don't think this is an option because of the specific plans the iPhone requires. I could be wrong though.

I am essentially a stay at home mom. I have two small contract jobs that I work. So I would say 90% of my phone usage is personal. I LOVE my iPhone. I cannot imagine not having it. I have the 3GS. I think if you purchased one within weeks you will wonder how you ever lived without it.

I have an itouch. I'm using it right now at home. But I am always limited to finding a WiFi hotspot.
Needless to say, my current AT&T contract comes up for renewal in about 8 weeks!!!

Asking on this forum about whether you should get an iPhone is essentially the same as asking if you should go to WDW. It's not exactly an unbiased group to ask.

Sit down and figure out what you WILL use your phone for. Not MAY use, but WILL use. Realize that buying ANY smart phone requires a data plan, usually in the range of $40 to $60 per month extra (at least here in Canada). Also, most data plans are 2 or 3 year contracts, so you are committing yourself to an extra $1,000 to $3,000 over the life of your contract.

For me, my last phone was a Motorola Razr, and i was perfectly fine with it. after doing some research, i decided on buying an Android based phone (LG Eve), mainly do to it being an open platform (I don't like the fact that His Highness Jobbs has to "approve" what I want on MY phone), but again, the ultimate choice is whether the extra $$ spent on a smart phone will be worth it for you, and only you can determine that.

I'm one person that an Ipod Touch is a better choice for. I spend the vast majority places that have wifi, and I can make calls with it. The new Ipod Touch also has a camera on it (although I don't have the new version). But I also need a phone with better sound quality (ATT issue)

DH and I both have Iphones. He has an Ipod (not used as much anymore), and Itouch and will be getting the Ipad when the second generation comes out. He LOVES his phone. He is an app freak and drools over Itunes every Tuesday when the new ones come out. He states he gets good service. I get dropped calls at several places in our home and while driving. WE loved the service at our other company better.

However, I am not so gadget inclined so I have had to work on using my Iphone fully. Most people really use their phone. I tell DH all the time that if a had a long commute to work on a train...I could see how have the internet and email and such would be very good. I work 1.5 miles from my house. Have my own computer here and on my desk at work. So by the time I get in my car, I am at work. I don't think I needed the Iphone....but would have been upset if DH hadn't got me one.

You should have been here the Christmas he purchased his first Ipod, 80G...just so he could take it the fire dept and SHOW them what he got himself for Christmas. Of course after showing me his new toy....Santa had placed an 8G Nano in my stocking, hot pink...he was at least thinking of me while at the Apple counter.

What makes you think that the rest of us cant do the same thing?

I dont for a minute feel I was brainwashed or coerced in buying anything.
