Should I change resort reservations?

I am heading down to the D23 Expo in August and since the hubby is not working (full time student), I really need to keep costs to a minimum. I was able to get Eden Roc at $40/night, which is way cheaper than anywhere else I have seen. The reviews on Hotels.com were not awesome, but in general they were "old but clean". I think I can deal with old, but I cannot deal with dirty. (I am hoping I have not been spoiled too badly by all my DVC stays over the last few years.) I have seen some comments on some older posts here that make me think that the rooms may actually be worse than the reviews indicated.

Will I regret staying here? Should I spend more to stay somewhere else, and if so, where? The more I spend on the hotel, the less I can spend on fun stuff.

I am planning on going to the parks one day prior to the Expo and one day after. The rest of the time will most likely be spent at the Expo, so I would prefer an easy walk to the convention center. This is my first and possibly only trip to this area and I want to make sure I enjoy it. It would suck if my experience were ruined by a really bad hotel room.

Any suggestions?

Have you considered taking a different approach and finding hotels that have complimentary breakfast and in some cases manager receptions in the evening. In this way, maybe your room cost go up (for a better and safer and cleaner room) but you recoup some of this investment by reducing your food budget.

I know Homewood suites, Hampton Inn, Some Ramada properties and probably a lot more have some form of free breakfast and more.

Unfortunately, priceline changed their anaheim zone about 2 months ago, so now Hilton, Hyatt, Marriot, Sheraton and Red Lion right by the convention zone are in the same zone as Orange County hotels, like the Orange County Ayres and Orange County Double Tree, which are both a little past Angels stadium, on the opposite side of the freeway than Disneyland. I got the OC Double Tree hotel and while the hotel was OK, it's not near Disneyland or the convention center, so unless you have your car and want to pay to park at Disney or the Convention Center (on top of the $13/night they charge you to park), you're at the mercy of their once an hour shuttle, which was never on time.

I also used priceline and ended up at the Doubletree OC. I was there for 5 nights and found the shuttle to actually be pretty reliable. I had no issues with the timing of it. Occassionaly it was a few minutes late but nothing unacceptable. I hated that the first shuttle did not leave the hotel till 7:30 which meant a late start to my day! (I like being at the gates early) My only other problem is I found the bed to be very uncomfortable but I had just stayed at the PPH for 5 nights and found that bed to be super comfy!
