Should I change home resorts? - sell SSR and repurchase OKW?

So my wife and I have been DVC members for about 6 years or so now and own at SSR. We have a growing 5yr old daughter and recently stayed at OKW so she would get a full bed and we LOVED OKW even more than SSR due to the size, theming, food, etc.

We are "considering" selling our SSR 150pts and repurchasing OKW for 200+ but are trying to weigh all the pros and cons. What do you think?

Pros
- bigger rooms
- prefer theming
- love Olivia's
- less points to stay there

Cons
- less ownership (unless purchasing extending contact resale)
- pools areas not quite as good
- older resort
- no walkway to DTD (but boat ride we like)

what am I missing and what should we do? :)

Have you had a problem booking OKW with your SSR points? Do you need the 11-month window? I think I would stick with what you have instead of taking a loss on selling it.

Have you ever had trouble booking OKW with your SSR points?

My thoughts are this: When you sell you will lose money in commission, closing costs, etc. You will also then own at a resort where your maint. fees are more expensive per points.

Unless you are never able to book OKW at the 7 month mark (which doesn't seem likely?), I would keep SSR and book OKW whenever you want to.

i agree with the others: unless you want grand villas and are having trouble at the 7 month window, just keep the SSR pts and book OKW at 7 months out.

thanks everyone... that is a good point. One thing we like is taking an extending almost 2 week vacation in June each year... this past year we were able to get OKW near hospitality house which was awesome...not sure we'd get that lucky every time but I think you all make some good points here. It may be best to just add on some points to my existing SSR ownership

I agree that you should keep your SSR points and book OKW when you want. :goodvibes

Just want to add that SSR MFs are cheaper than OKW MFs and SSR has a longer contract life than OKW. Win!

we have the same issue: own @ VWL, almost always stay @ AKV. We are have always gotten AKV @ 7 months for the past 5 years, so we are just keeping VWL. OKW is a large resort--if you book right at 7 months, I think you should usually be able to get HH, and if you don't, it's not the end of the world. We have stayed in blgs 27 and 30 and it was still an easy walk. This summer, bldg. 19 was very close.

I would also keep my ssr if I were you and just add on at okw for 50 points or so. I have always booked at 7 months or less with no problems . I just not picky about were I stay cause all I care about is that I am at my favorite place disney .

You'd waste approx $1500 on the exchange in commissions and fees which could go towards points. I don't think you'll have any trouble getting in to OKW, you may or may not get near HH routinely but by wait listing, you should get it most of the time. That assumes you're not trying to get a 3 BR GV. If you need more points I wouldn't buy OKW points anyway. I'd suggest you buy something else that'll give you options you don't have now. Maybe AKV, BLT, BWV, VGF or the Poly come to mind, basically any other resort but OKW even VB or HH. Each give you options you don't have currently though each has pros and cons. For AKV you pick up the value option but you should be able to get the rest of the views there with your SSR points. BWV gives you the standard view option. The rest give you various options near MK or off property options. It sounds like you're looking at around 200-225 total, I'd suggest you look at resale and compare to retail for this size contract. You might let what you find resale drive your choices. I would only look at the same UY and same title for almost all situations for these numbers.

One opposing view and something you should look at given the contract sizes you're considering is the idea that a 200-250 point contract may be less per point than a smaller contract. One approach one could take would be to find a loaded larger contract and buy it then sell the 150 point contract. This assumes one can float the new contract with cash while trying to sell the other one.
