im looking to book for poly for next August and not sure if I should book room only or room and tickets. This year I did get a few pins in the mail one was 30% off rooms and if you upgrade to a package you would get free park hopper. The other came later it was just for,30% off rooms or free dining which of course starsts end of August. Years ago we went two years in a row when they were offering free dining mid August but now I see that starts later and afraid cutting it too close to kids going back to,school. Plus I'm not counting on that. If I do book room only now and an offer comes in later am I allowed to upgrade to a,package or would I have to make a whole new reservation.

If a package is what you ultimately want, book a package. The room only discounts have always applied to the room portion of a package too and that is expected to continue.

The room only system and the package system at Disney reservations do not communicate with each other, they are entirely different and separate. If you book a room only now with a one night deposit, that would have to be cancelled and the deposit refunded to rebook as a package reservation with a new deposit.

Ok great thanks for the response. I wasn't sure if they discount if I had the package so that's good to hear.

Yes, if you book a package and a room discount comes out, the discount can be applied as long as there is availability for the resort/room type you have booked. As the pp said, the discount will be on the room portion only (unless the discount is specific to a package like FD), but can still be applied to a package reservation (pending availability).

Tami, I'm in the same boat as you. Have a rack rate booked now (room only) at the Poly for next march. Ultimately want tickets added (so a package) but not sure if it's even worth trying to switch it to a package on the 22nd when they will be flooded w/ calls? I just didn't know, if discounts were later released, and room only was better for me, can they apply that to my room only reservation or do I need to have a package booked, or vice versa?

If you apply a discount to a room only reservation, then later decide to change to a package, then the room only reservation will be cancelled and you will be booking a new reservation. You may have issues keeping any discount you already had. When booking a package, you can apply a valid discount on the room portion of the reservation to a package (as long as the dates, resort and room category you booked are eligible for the promotion and there are still promotion rooms available for that booking).

You can also keep the room-only reservation and purchase tickets separately from the room reservation, link it all to MDX and away you go. You do not have to rebook your reservation to a package to get tickets. The biggest thing to consider when keeping the room-only is if a discount is released that is applicable only to packages (like Stay/Play/Dine or free dining) because you'd definitely have to rebook to get that type of discount. And then if you have already purchased tickets separately, you're stuck with those tickets.

So if what you really want is a package, then cancel your room only and book a package when they come available (you probably don't have to do it immediately unless you want something very specific that you will have trouble getting if you wait a few days).

Peaches0313, I know this whole thing is so confusing. I think I'm going to wait until the 22nd and book the package. From what the above posters said any room only discounts can be applied later on if it comes available. If fd comes out you need the package. Maybe just keep your room only for now and change on the 22nd to play it safe.

Thanks Tami and Makira, I'm still unsure. I know you can't count on what's happened in the past, BUT looking at last year, I think that room only discount would be better than free dining or stay/play/dine for us. In which case I'd want to just stick w/ my room only reservation and book tickets later on separately. BUT, what if this year they only come out w/ deals for packages???? Then I'm screwed... ugggg. Have Poly during Easter/ spring break...

Tami, I Just reread what you said... AS LONG AS you can apply a room only discount to a package, then maybe it would be best to switch to a package to play it safe...

That's what I recall reading, but that there have been room only discounts over that time. So if I switch to a package, I can still apply that to a package, right??? Sorry for all the questions

Thanks mickeynut

You're welcome :goodvibes.

If you need tickets anyway, I'd book the package as you can apply either a room discount or FD (pending availability) without having to cancel and rebook :).

Yes, if you have a package and a room discount comes out and the resort/room type you have booked is available under the discount, you can have it applied to your existing reservation. The discount will be on the room portion only, but you can have it applied to a package (pending availability).
