Should Disney add calorie counts?

Just tossing in my (not wanted but I'm going to give them anyway :rotfl2: ) thoughts. I live in NYC and I know that the listing of calories on the menus has definitely changed the way I eat. I think the nutritional information is very important for a person to find...but I also think people should ENJOY their vacations. I wish Disney had a print out of the calorie count of their items, but that said print out was available only by request. I know sometimes I don't care how many calories it is, I want to have a Creme Brulee, I am going to have that Creme Brulee and I don't care how many calories it has! I don't think people should be made to feel guilty for choosing what they want to eat on vacation. Most folks end up coming back and working off what they ate anyway.

This thread DOES answer a question I had (I was curious if Disney posted these) so thank you OP :thumbsup2

I think the information would be nice to know if you wanted to really know. Not necessarily on the menus, but on a seperate information paper.
Or even, as I think has been mentioned in this thread, online.

While it's not necessarily complete nutritional information, are any of you who do want to know calories, etc, aware of Dotti's Weight Loss Zone? She's got menus and calorie counts - and more, where available - from probably a couple of hundred or more restaurant chains. No Disney-owned ones, but possibly Rainforest, EoS, Wolfgang Puck... The url is dwlz dot com - scroll about halfway down the main page for links to restaurants, Canadian restaurants, a bunch of other pages... no daily specials, of course - but a website could certainly work, and with Disney putting its menus online, nutritional information really can't be all that hard (by clicking another link, of course, for those of us who DON'T want to know ;))

I have to agree with this post, and again, my concern for this is for the Chef-Driven, Disney Signature Restaurants. Fast food that is prepacked is an entirely different story. I am more for consumer education by professional doctors and nutritionists, especially of those who have medical issues like diabetes. I empathize with the DISer with 2 type 1 kids. Restaurants are not hospitals or nursing homes, we try to do our best, but it is not safely within our realm to do on site reliable nutrient analysis. :)

Well if they at least would give the info for the pre packaged stuff that would be a huge help. But they refuse that also.

As for the comments about the variations while many things would affect someone with allergies getting a rough carb count is not that dangerous. It is more dangerous for me to have to guess for every meal that to have someone give me a rough estimate. Besides the carb infor I have to take into account the activity of the day, excitement level, stress level, heat and or cold in the air temperature, where my dd might be in the hormone level during the month, if they are sick or might be getting sick, and the direction the wind blows. If they could give me so idea of the range the actual carbs might be would be better then not knowing at all. Getting the carb counts if the correct range isn't going to kill my child; it could only assist me adding it into the already complex set of variables I must take into account.

Yes, but type 1 diabetes is a totally different disease then type 2. Our care is self driven not overseen by our doctors other then 4 times a year when we check in. Our family only needs carb counts my doctors or any nutritionists for that matter can't get me that kind of info for my kids daily food intake...it needs to come from the restaurants themselves. At home we are able to read the packages and estimate based on the size of the portion served. IT is not an exact science by far but it would be helpful if Disney restaurants understood I'm only looking for a rough estimate of the carb count. My kids have no special nutritional needs like a type 2 might have. They can and do eat exactly what they want at any time of the day they want.

I'm not really sure why you are comparing a restaurant to a hospital or nursing home; if in my household I'm able to get an estimate on the carbs count in a item of food I'm sure that the computer driven program is much more reliable for a type 1 diabetic trying to estimate the possible carbs in any given food.

Once again, I am a chef and not a doctor, nutritionist or parent. I am not responsible for giving this information out-I am a restaurant, guests pay, I give them food-in a hospital, patients pay, and when required medically-diet is part of the service provided. Unfortunately, some people are too quick to sue in our society, and so I can not blame Disney for not wanting to get involved with nutrition analysis. My advice is that if any restaurant will not abide by your requests for nutrition analysis, then consider finding another place to dine. If you still want to go to Disney, rent a villa and cook for yourselves.
