Anyone have any suggestions on how to obtain a short term lease?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking at options for my mom, she would be relocating and we are ultimately looking at retirement/assisted facility but need to get her VA Benefits approved prior to her residing there ( 6-9 month wait) We are hoping to negotiate a 6 month lease on a place, but I have not rented since college..anyone have any pointers, tips, helpful suggestions as to how to approach the landlord /agency or realtor on this so they do not just laugh at us and walk away? The retirement home will allow month to month, but it is at 1500 more per month than when the VA benefits kick in so not an option for a 6-9 month period, and she can't sign a lease at the retirement place unless we know for sure in writing the benefit is approved.
So, anyone ever successfully negotiate a short term lease and how did you do it?
My home has stairs, my mom cannot maneuver them and my bath is upstairs, so need to find a one level set up for her.

Thanks!

Try an executive rental place. These are for short term leases. For other places, be prepared to a) sign a one year lease or b) offer more than the asking rent. You can also try rentals.com or vrbo.com. As a landlord, I don't laugh at offers, so don't worry about that.

We did this when we were moving back from TX to MO and I had to finish out the school year.

Not all places require a year lease so you may not have a problem at all. Do you have any colleges near you? Sometimes when profs go on sabbatical they are looking for short term renters to stay in their houses. Another option might be to look into one of those long term hotels (Residence Inn, etc.). I don't know how expensive they are but that might be an option too.

Check out Craigslist in your area. There usually is a section for short term leases.

Also check sublets. Some college students move away at the end of the semester, and they need someone to take over the rest of the lease. Right now, you may find summer sublets for 3 months. (It buys you some extra time.) Or graduates who are leaving and still have 6 months left.

There are also some motels that rent by the week or the month at cheaper rates. There are also motels that are called "extended stay" motels.

Some people have mentioned getting super cheap rates at Priceline and the other travel sites. You can only get a room for about 21 days, then you have to enter for a new price quote again for another 21 days. Again, it buys you some time while looking for around.

The only thing I know is that short term leases, when available are typically done at a higher rental rate than a 12 month lease.

So if you are asking a place that doesn't usually do then, you might over that in your negotiation.

Yep, we paid more for the short term however we had to do it.

Thanks everyone!Great helpful options, I appreciate it! I checked the long term hotels nearest us in the past as they have elevators and obviously the 1 floor living, but security became an issue. Going to look into the other suggestions today :)
