shopping - NY vs Orlando?

Which city is better for shopping?

In Orlando it would be at the outlet malls and DTD, so I am sure the range is better in NY but price wise?

I am planning on shopping at both locations but would love to hear which you prefer and why?

Also where would be your "not to miss" shops in NY and Orlando?

ok just along the same theme

im looking at a real smick philoshave shaver from walmart or amazon $150 (about $450 at harvey norman for the exact same shaver)

its only available online so i think i will have to have it delivered to a store to pick up

or if from amazon have it somehow delivered to our room at walt disney

and i think i read somewhere that the boardwalk charges you for having packages delivered, so maybe get it sent to universal ( i dont know yet)

any ideas ?

as for new york or orlando

My DH says Orlando. I shopped lots in NYC but was tired of it once we hit Orlando. My DH however continued his shopping and loved the bargains at the Orlando mall.

In NYC, gotta go to Macy's. Visit the customer service counter and they will give you an "international" visitors card that gives you 10% off everything for your whole visit. With everything so cheap already, it's excellent. Go to www.macys.com to check out the type of stuff they have.

I can't comment on the Orlando places but I know DH bought lots of cheap Nike stuff most esp.

I'm guessing that this is not a trick question!

The last time I was in NYC was in 2007 and things might have changed since. But in 2007, if you spent $150 or less in the one transaction, there was no sales tax charged. If you spent over $150 in the one transaction, then the state taxes would apply.

If you have time to head out to Woodbury Common Outlet outside of NYC, then you would be able to combine outlet shopping and NYC experience in the same trip. I've been to NYC three time now....never made it out to the Common YET! Always too busy shopping in the downtown area instead.

Orlando outlets are much like every other outlet. If you find something you like and in the right size, then it can be a bargain. It can be challenging finding something you like.....and then finding it in the right size.

I've always thought that if the full retail shops are on sale, then the shopping in the retail malls can be just as much a bargain as the outlets.

As to which is better?

My recommendation on shopping when on holiday anywhere is that if you see something you love, have the budget for it and are happy with the price, get it! You never know if you're going to come back....and you definitely don't want to come home thinking I wish I'd bought that when I had the chance to...!

I thought Orlando outlet malls might have much better prices than than New York but I wasn't sure. We are planning on being in NY for black Friday so everything should be on sale - so wasn't sure if I should hold off all of our shopping till we get to NY...

Originally we were going to go to NY first then Orlando but now it looks like we might be swapping and going to WDW first so I don't want to do a tonne of shopping there then get to NY and find better stuff iykwim

dabecs sounds like we will be in New york at the same time.
I love outlet malls so im scared about new york I have no idea which one will be better depends on what time of shopping you like i guess.

Have been to Woodbury Commons Outlets when in NY- huge place with great bargains on branded clothing, shoes, etc. Would highly reccomend to go if you are in NY. Good day trip from NYC -allow good 6-8 hrs.
Going to Orlando may2012 for Disney cruise & WDW so will do shopping with family to compare.

I would strongly recommend you do shopping in Orlando or in Manhatten (particularly for Black Friday), it is not worth wasting a day in NY going to one outlet mall hours away when you could go to up to three outlets and two big malls in one day in Orlando as they are all within a short drive of WDW and each other.

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving when most shops have big sales - similar to our Boxing Day sales. Some shops open at 4am and others open the night before

I haven't shopped at the outlets in Orlando - I did bring home almost the entire contents of the Disney Chrsitmas shop at DTD in 1997 though!!

On our trip this time we will shop a little bit in NYC - we will go to Macy's and my DH and DS13 will both get gear at Old Navy and Footlocker, but I will wait for most things until we get to Las Vegas - that is the last stop for us and I plan to fill a couple of bags there. DH and kids by the pool - me at the Premium Outlets - stand back!!

There are some special things that you can only do in NYC though - so we will head back to FAO Schwartz to make another custom Barbie Doll - this was amazing. She comes in a gorgeous pink box and my DD (then 5) was so proud to walk down 5th Avenue with Barbie in one hand and a pretzel as big as her head in the other.

Other NYC must-dos are the Billabong shop in Times Square for NY themed t-shirts ($20!!!) and of course Tiffany & Co - if he's going to buy you something from Tiffany - make sure that it's from the one and only 5th Avenue store!! You can just go in and walk around - they encourage it! In 2009 my amazing DH bought me something sparkly there and it was an experience that I will NEVER forget!! This time I get to go back to Tiffany - no purchases this time, that was a once in a lifetime moment - but I do get to have the ring cleaned there!!

It was my daughters 16th birthday yesterday and I really wanted to give her a Tiffanys gift card, but they wouldnt ship and the ones I could buy here are not valid in NY -

So then I thought I would get a genuine Tiffanys gift box and put some US cash in it, but they wouldnt sell me a box - (would have only put $200 in, probably doesnt go far at Tiffanys -hopefully enough to buy a charm for her bracelet)

So she got an Iphone!

I doubt it...unless you are on a roadtrip with time and accommodation OUTSIDE the city for this trip I say waste of time and money...

I personally don't find much in the outlets in the US of interest to me and I've been to many in MANY different states across the USA and Canada. It's basically Disney outlets where I buy stuff.

Spend the time in NYC on NY specific attractions and shopping the CITY stores for the fun of the unique experience.

Outlet shop in Orlando where you have the cheaper accommodation

You will have a larger selection of things in NYC than Orlando at regular shops.

I shopped both (I'm a big, big shopper )

Orlando you can get a lot done in a smaller space, like Florida Mall or Mall at Millenia or the outlet malls. Where as NYC it's walking the streets, street after long street. There is the largest Macys in NY (it's HUGE), then as mentioned Tiffany & Co.... OMG, I was in heaven in that store (where as the store in Orlando is quite small), oh and the Apple store, such a cool building. So the stores in NYC are much bigger with a much larger selection to choose from due to the size of the stores.

But shopping in Orlando is still good.

I could (and do) happily fill a number of suitcases at both

Have never been to Orlando,

but I *heart* shopping in NY.

Century 21 across from the WTC is amazing (go early to beat the crowds).

I love Union Square. It has the biggest DSW and an awesome Filene's basement. Plus right next to it is a Whole Foods Grocer and around the corner is Max Brenner.

Macys of course. With the 10% card, once you have it you can use it at any Macys in the 30 day period stamped on the card. THey like to see your passport or drivers licence.

For outlet shopping we took a bus from the NJ bus terminal to Jersey Gardens. They have a coupon book if you sign up online.We were there when it opened and took an empty suitcase each. 6 hours later they were full and we hadn't even covered half the mall. It is in a sales tax free zone for clothing and shoes I've done a lot of outlet shopping in the US and this is my equal favourite for awesome deals.

erm... maybe a few times.. both premium outlets, the strip and a few suburban malls
