Caught out a shop lifter today in the charity shop i help in . I can't see why poeple want to steal from a charity shop as the prices are good, and i wish that they would stop and think about the reason we have them is to raise funds for good courses.

Well done for catching them Jill, some people really should think first, honestly:confused3

Terrible isn't it, people have come into our church whilst we've been in the building and took handbags etc

although I think its a pretty despicable thing to do I wonder what drove them to it. not everyone steals for kicks or drug money, maybe they are really hard up? :confused3 I can feel sorry for people who are that desperate

Well done Jill
DW used to manager a charity shop and it goes on all the time, she caught a very well dress lady taking a 50p bracelet.:sad2:

You never can tell with some people,.
We sell new goods as well as donated items and the new bags have been strapped together on the shelf and the new watches have had to have there outer boxes taped to the shelf so they don't go walkies.
It's such a shame that it has to be like this.

Did you end up calling the police, or did you end up letting them go with a slap on the wrist??

I remember working in retail, and the amount of times the manager would let people go with a slap on the wrist was shocking. When I became assistant manager and no higher manger was on duty, I would be mean and call the police. Even if the company decided to not press charges, it would scare the daylights out of people.

When I left the company, we had hired an ex-shoplifter in security who had stolen tens of thousands of pounds worth of stuff from anywhere and everywhere. Apparently she ended up getting caught because she tried to steal a book from a chariety shop. Her reasoning, the rush?

Its a shame people have to resort to steal and its horrible people do it from charity shops.

The bag that the item was in, was a bag that the lady had left near the counter so she could carry on looking so i said that i've move it so that no one would trip over it & thats when i noticed the the item had one of our labels on it. I called for the manageress & she said while looking inside, is this a bag of donated goods, & i said no i was looking after it for a lady while she was looking, this lady then said when she knew we had found the item that she had put them in the bag, while still looking around,so i said that i'll put them on the counter until your ready for serving. All the time she kept her eyes on me and i on her. After she left the store it was said by another helper that on saturday she was in and had been changing the prices on some of the goods.
When something like this happens one store will call another to let them know who to look out for & this can deter some of them if they know they are being watched.
The person in question was from a east european country.
