OK, so I didn't try to take any pics myself. It was 4am and I'm lucky I was standing in my yard and hadn't stumbled into somebody elses being half asleep. Just curious did anybody get out this morning and take pics and how on earth do you do it if you did.
 
I had planned on it, but the rain came sooner than it was forecasted.

You just need a tripod, a remote shutter release, a decent wide-angle lens, and a good view.

Set your camera to "bulb" setting and set up the lens (use manual focus) to view the heavens near Orion to the south east and take pictures with the remote shutter release of varying shutter times (3-10 minutes duration).
