I live in MS so I have heard the ignorant comments many times but I think now I simply find them amusing. That's why I refuse to judge a state or its people unless I have actually been there! People would be surprised by how different MS is from the way movies portray it or certain stereotypes. I am not originally from here and have lived in 5 others states but I LOVE it here and have no desire to move any time soon!

I will say though that a lot of people I know here are big sweet tea drinkers including my dh and his family. I don't like tea of any kind though. Oh, and dh does own shotguns since he hunts but he doesn't sit on the front porch with it drinking sweet tea, lol! Actually the only time he actually drinks sweet tea is if we go out to eat. We only drink water at home.

There is a website for Eastern Nationals: www.4hroundup.com. They have the results from 2000-present for all the events. North Carolina swept HB, HJ, and Hipp. this year. They were always a powerhouse, but particularly in HJ. We've had one of their coaches up here a couple of times to do clinics for our kids.

HB was DD's favorite event, too. She would have done HJ or Hipp., but the practices for those required a lot of driving. Practices for presentations were much easier as the National coaches were from our county, so we didn't have to travel. Plus, she really got into them. And, boy, when she had to do presentations in college, she looked like a star! They were a piece of cake to her and she got many compliments (and good grades!) Great experience!

It is really amazing when they get to college and realize just how much they really got from 4-H. DD was accepted into the Early Entry Pharmacy Honors Program. To do that, besides having the grades and ACT score, she had to complete a lenghty application (accomplishments, community service, etc. - lots of 4-H stuff there at local, regional, and national level), write an impromptu essay in 20 minutes, AND go through an interview process with two different interview groups.

She said that the Horse Judging had a huge impact on those last two items. Since you have to organize your oral reasons quickly, that helped her with the essay. The experience of actually delivering those oral reasons to complete strangers helped keep her from being nervous during her interviews.

She said it really showed her how much more 4-H is than just "fun". In fact, she gives 4-H a lot of the credit for her getting accepted.
