Virtual memory really has nothing to do with Ram, and you cannot upgrade it much more than windows already does. The maximum allowable VM is 9gig.
Virtual Memory is also called a "paging file" - essentially, it allows Windows to use hard drive space as ram (thats very basic but the best way to describe it). Upgrading your ram can help a little bit, but mostly it comes from too much being done on your PC - VMK is page file heavy. I have watched the task manager diag tools and VMK, on my PC, spikes CPU usage to 100% when logging in or logging out. and it sits around 50% when doing anything, with major spikes when opening quests, stores and inventory. From playing around lately, I see that VMK pal blocks shockwave installs (does not appear to be on purpose) so best bet is to go directly to the Adobe website ( www.adobe.com ) and download shockwave updates from there when Pal is not running. Pal also has a minor issue where it eliminates some of the memory buffer.

for those that do not know what they are doing: Do not play with virtual memory - you WILL screw up your PC is you do it wrong. A reboot should be enough to fix the issue.

Thought I'd bump this thread since the error you describe, Mal, is back in force. FlyingPegasus was talking about it the other day too.

Today I got "Out of memory loading member 1 of PLAYER-CAST 42, even after purging all purgeable castmembers" in a Shockwave message. You click OK in the dialogue window and...... you might as well reboot and start again.

I have reported it to the White Hand and will keep y'all posted.

Thanks for the info surf...........

Virtual memory is when your PC uses part of your hard drive space as Ram Memort in order to make programs run faster. The drawback is that virtual memory is slower and bog your processor down. If you are getting this error message then your best bet is to go purchase more or higher Ram memory sticks for your computer. For a basic understanding of Virtual Memory read this article

Good article - howstuffworks does a good job. Upgrading RAM will help a little bit. But if you are already running 1 gig of ram, 2 gig wont make that much difference until VISTA comes out - Windows XP really only recognizes the first 1024 MB of RAM (1 gig) - windows 2000 only recognizes the first 512 MB of RAM - the computer will use the extra ram, but not efficiently

Very true . I was just thinking in general terms . Most out of the box PC's only come with 256 or 512 RAM the upgrade to 1 gig did wonders for me as well as the upgrade to a 126 Video card. Now lets teach them to overclock the processors :dance3:

You talk like my dad and it confuses me :lmao:

I changed my virtual memory from 500MB to 3 Gigs(I have a 200 Gig hardrive) and I never got that message ever again and I did that back in June.

Nano - if you partition your hard drive, you can set each hard drive to have a VM of 4.5 gig - giving you a total of 9 for 2 drives - I do not think Windows wil recognize any more than 2 drives for VM though, have never tried it either however.

how do I get more memorie or something? I really need to know my dad works with computers ;) so I can ask him to fix it if I know how he fixes computers

Well...I guess in the realm of glitchiness, I'm fairing better than you guys! My problem is that all the games I normally play on the web, that require shockwave, were not playing. So I went and downloaded it (vmk was the origional reason I did a new dl for it), and the only game that still refuses to work is...vmk! I'm rather perturbed by this situation...I hope I can get the pin in the Emporium!!! :confused3

Mal. Just pulled some research on that error message and the answer i received was that it was a memory usage error. If it happens again run your task manager and see if it is pegged at 100%. If it is then you probably need to upgrade your ram or even possibly your video card. A short term solution would be to make sure you restart your PC each time before you enter VMK to free up any virtual memory that is in use. Hope this helps and please keep us informed . This is a new error to me.

Hi Grumpy Dad but this thread was bumped from over a year ago....thanks for trying to help but I am not having any problem at this time with that error.

I am going to close this now since my issue with this was in 2005..and this is too confusing I think.....if anyone else is still having a issue with VMK and shockwave please start a new thread...Thanks-Mal
