Canadians.......help me out. I ordered 2 swimsuits from Justice online for my DD. I paid for each suit plus I had to pay $20 for shipping. Product was delivered within a week. It was a US to Canada transaction but I figured the $20 US fee was all I had to pay. So today I get in the mail a bill from FedEx charging me $16.68 for the shipping of this product. Didn't I already pay this with Justice? There was clearly a $20 shipping fee on my bill. Does anyone understand why FedEx is charging me.

Probably their Brokerage Fee. Most shippers will charge you an additional brokerage fee for whatever it is they have to do to bring things across the border and get them cleared. FedEx actually has one of the lowest-fee brokerage fees. I've seen $20 orders shipped via UPS with $40 brokerage fees. When I buy something online that will come across the border, I always make sure that it's not being shipped by UPS before I place the order.

May also include the collection of the HST which sometimes is collected by the shipping company.

Since you're in Ottawa, I'd suggest that you try out the UPS Store in Ogdensburg, NY. It's a 45-60 minute drive from Ottawa. When you get something shipped, you ship it to their address (doesn't matter if it's shipped via UPS or not) and they'll hold it for you for $5. You then just drive over and pick it up. You save a ton in international shipping fees. Store details are at http://www.theupsstorelocal.com/2946/community.htm

OH yeah, I ordered from Justice at Xmas and got hit with that bill too. There's a Justice in Watertown at the Salmon Run Mall, that's a 1 hour drive for me. I will not order on-line anymore and just drive there instead!!

The same thing happened to me when I ordered from Gymboree! It was a great sale - but once the duty and shipping and then brokerage fees were paid - not so great!

I live close enough to the states that I have things shipped to a local receiving store, they only charge $2.50 for each package, and its us shipping. I then go once a month and pick my packages up.
Its way cheaper then brokerage fees.

We have Justice in Canada now....no need to order from the US anymore. The merchandise and sales are identical.

I like ordering from places like L.L. Bean who have no shipping charges for Canadian orders and the price you pay online is the total price. They prepay everything including duties and GST so the package just shows up at your door with no additional cost.

For other companies that either (a) don't ship to Canada, or (b) charge an arm and a leg for shipping, we'll order stuff online about 7-10 days before our next Disney trip and have them deliver it to our resort. For places that offer free shipping (like Amazon.com) this works out great.
