Which ship just had this done, Magic or Wonder?

I thought this happened to one of the ships, maybe about a year ago? Am I right?

And the Magic will be drydocked next October... 10/15 is the 1st Magic sailing after the rehab... Yay!

thanks,
Paul

What, exactly, happens to the ship on a rehab? Is it ship-seaworthy maintenance or cosmetic maintenance? If it's also cosmetic maintenance does that include staterooms/restaurants?

Probably both. The cruise critic review states:

"The Wonder looks brand-new thanks to its October 2004 dry-dock (a two-week period of refurbishment). Carpets and wood decking were replaced, furniture reupholstered, and three new areas were added to the ship -- Cove Cafe, Diversions, and Aloft. Cove Cafe is an adults-only coffee bar, located next to the Quiet Cove pool. It's a great space for relaxing on comfortable couches, watching TV, checking e-mail, or reading one of the many magazines on the shelves. Sports enthusiasts now have the English sports pub styled Diversions, located in the Wonder's "entertainment district." The former ESPN Skybox (in the forward funnel of the ship) was transformed into a new space for teens called Aloft. In addition to the public space changes, cabins received new, better quality, mattresses, thicker towels (including bath sheets), and sateen bed linens."

It's a little of both. There are some standard maintenance procedures that can't be done while the ship is in the water, such as work to be done on the propellers or the outboard parts of the drive mechanism. They also use the drydock period to do major renovations to public areas which would have to be closed to passengers while the ship is sailing. All cruise ships are drydocked regularly for this type of maintenance. Usually every 2-3 years.

On both the Magic and Wonder, they changed the theming of a couple of the bars, and the coffee house, among other things, during the last drydock.

We were on the Magic right after it came out of dry-dock in 2003 ... I'll never forget that they just got thru putting a nice new coat of paint on her belly and when we were in Grand Caymen, coming back from swimming with the stingrays, the sky opened up with rain, the tender we were on gave her a big kiss and took off some of that brand new paint! The seas were really rocky and you couldn't see very far, poor tender captain did the best he could but the sea was just rocking the wrong way and BAM. While we were docked in Castaway Cay the "yellow suits" were out there with the brushes and painting it over.

llyolf ... Coudersport Hmn, that is part of my work territory and I'm wondering, just how are you getting to Port Canaveral ... there isn't any airport near you that I know of?

my plan right now is driving 2 or 3 hours to Buffalo and flying SW nonstop to MCO.... but I've driven to to In-laws in Maryland and flew out of BWI and IAD as well...

there is a dinky little regional airport in Bradford, PA (not related to me in any way) that flies a puddle jumper Beechcraft 1900 twice a day... but that's UsAir.... and 1900's only give you single seats, so 3 and 5 yr olds would be sorta alone... ;)

besides... we love Southwest...

later,
Paul

So does the Magic have the thicker towels and sateen sheets, too? Hope that's not part of the October 2005 remodel, I'm going in September!

Actually when we were on the wonder just a month ago there was a show on that was talking about the Magic the last time it was redone and it showed what is done when drydocked...

Was it done in Norfolk? I can't remember when one came in, but it happened a while ago. Ships from other companies have come here and I know at least once a Disney ship has come in. I'm from the area and it's cool seeing them when they come in.

We just got off the Wonder on Feb 17 and we were told by a CM it had 200 rolls of new carpeting installed. The sheets are sateen and very soft. The ship looks brand new!!

Wow...

I think. IT said that it was heading up to Canada along the coast because it was one of the only places where you can lift the ship out of the water...

Is that show thing on every cruise? Or just mine?
