Shellfish allergies at Disney dining

My son has a shellfish allergy. Some places are meticulous about frying items separately, while others just throw everything into one big fry pot.

We have ressies at Raglan Road, but now I'm wondering if everything gets fried in the same oil as the shrimp.

He doesn't have a fish allergy, just shellfish.

At Raglan Road I wouldn't worry about safety. They won't cook his food in the same oil where shrimp has been cooked if you make sure your server knows about the allergy and has a chef come out to talk to you. The only thing I don't know is if the chef will say he can't deep fry something for your son or if the chef will heat up a separate pan of oil to fry his food which of course will take extra time. That's something only a chef from the restaurant can tell you. Ask the Special Diets department and they'll contact a chef at Raglan Road to get a firm answer.

My DH has the same allergy and the only place that I was told that might be a problem was 'Ohana. They do use the same fryer for anything shellfish or not. The grills are also an issue. They only use one grill for shrimp, but they will not guarantee that there won't be any cross-contamination. We haven't eaten at Raglan Road, but if you send an e-mail to Disney Dining, they will forward it to someone at the restuarant (some that responded were Chefs, others were the managers) and they will let you know if there may be any issues!

My DH too as the same allergy. Last month we were there and we had got the dining plan. I had noted on all our reservations about his allergy. At each restuarant we went too last month they saw my notation and also explained certain meals, etc. His allergy is pretty bad, been in the emergency room a few times due to it.

DH has the same allergy and has never had a problem anywhere during our 20 plus years of dining at WDW. We have been to Raglan Road and there were no issues there. As others have said, make note of it on your reservations and also let your server aware of it at the time. On several occasions the chef has even come to our table to confirm that a particular dish would be safe for DH to eat. ::MinnieMo

I have the same allergy. I've never had any problems at Disney. In fact, once at California Grille, the waitress told me that if I'd like to order sushi, the chef would make sure to do mine on a separate prep area, one that was never used with shellfish, and a different knife would be used to assure no cross contamination. The chefs at most places are good about coming to the table and talking with you.

Disney does a fantastic job of handling every allergy and dietary restriction imaginable. Your son will be one of hundreds -- even thousands -- with a shellfish allergy to dine at the Disney restaurants. The chefs are well-equipped to handle the situation, and I assure you that you have nothing to worry about. Just make sure to remind your server before ordering, and you'll be fine.

Have fun!

My husband has the same allergy - very severe - and we had no problems anywhere in Disney (incl Ohana). Good luck!

That's awesome! I really wanted to eat there on our next trip. Now I just won't talk about it for a while so DH won' remember the restaurant name. When we were first dating, I had been at a party earlier and the day and had shrimp. I gave him ha kiss and his lips wouldn't stop itching! We were lucky that the reaction wasn't worse, but that's how I found out about his allergy!

ETA: He's been overly careful ever since - he brings this up every time...

I was really impressed with everywhere we ate. The chefs would come to the table and discuss what was off limits. To be safe, we didn't have shrimp brought to the table at all in Ohana. They also walked him through the buffet at Chef Mickey to let him know of any possible problems with salads, soups, etc. The only place I didn't try was Col Harbor House since it was QS and I never could find out if the shrimp was cooking in the same oil as nuggets. If anyone needs a list of the places we ate, just pm me and I'll be happy to provide!

Hi Hon
This past March I spent the better part of my holiday watching the sunshine from my resort bed (OKW). I arrived late and very tired and MY FAULT HERE,I ordered chicken and french fries from Goods To Go. I saw conch soup on the small overhead menu but didn't see anything else.I have a severe shell fish allergy.
Second mistake was not having my Epi-pen with me. I quickly realized that I must have eaten something which was cross contaminated with shell fish and was able to handle it with Reactine and Benadryl.Very lucky this time. I contacted the front desk and they checked for me at Goods to go--Yes they cook their conch fritters and a few other shell fish items things in the same oil as regular french fries.
So just a warning --ASK if they have a designated shell-fish free fryer. And always take the time to ask to speak to the chef. I will always ask now and always carry my Epi Pen with me.
Last year we ate at Raglan road and they took great care to cook my stuff in an area of the kitchen so as not to have it cross contaminated with shell fish.
I've recently discovered that most chinese food in my home location is cooked in oyster sauce so no more store bought chinese food for me.

Best wishes and have a great holiday

Hugs Mel

He may not be able to get something fried but I'm sure they'll have something he can eat if he is flexible. Raglan Road is not owned by WDW so they don't have the same standards on allergy preparations. Many places at WDW have dedicated allergy fryers where they only do fries and the special allergy safe foods but not even all WDW owned places have separate fryers.

I can't speak to Raglan Road, or probably any other DTD restaurant. But for Table Service restaurants in the parks or a resort hotel, I can say that the care appears to be extraordinary. My wife has a severe shellfish allergy (she can't even walk into a Red Lobster without itching), and the restaurants were extremely accommodating. The chef came over to the table at every restaurant before we were allowed to order and told her what was OK and not OK. This was even true at 50's Prime Time where they have no shellfish items of any kind anywhere on the menu.

The attention they paid to her allergy was her favorite part of the trip. You're practically a celebrity. And we did eat at Ohana with no problem, although no shrimp was brought to the table, and we did sit on the outside of the restaurant to get better ventilation.

Just be sure to note it on all your reservations and call attention to it when you show up.

Counter Service may of course be a little different.

Wow...thinking about it, my son has eaten at Goods to Go multiple times with no ill effects. If the just do the conch, that's probably it, as I don't believe he has a mollusk allergy, more the shrimp and lobster kind.

I have a life threatening Shell Fish allergy and I called Disney dining ahead of time and had my allergy noted ahead of time.I had no issues on any of my trips

Narcoossee's took very good care of my son who had a seafood/shellfish. The chef said they would drain one of the fryers so my son could have fried chicken tenders. It took a little bit so they brought him out an appetizer.

DH also has a bird allergy. No chicken, duck, turkey ect. He's never had a reaction at WDW.
