It's time for me to buy a new sheet set for our bed, but I don't even know where to begin.

I don't want to spend a fortune, but I do want really soft sheets.

What is a good thread count to look for? Sateen or percale???? What does that even mean?? LOL

We have a big California King bed. I have bought the last two sheet sets from Overstock.com. I bought the 300 thread count or better--much softer.
check out that site and you will find a lot of sheet sets. As far as percale or sateen, I am not sure.

Go for the higher thread count, you can tell a difference. I bought a set of 1000 count Eqyptian cotton sheets on Ebay for a really good price. I prefer precale vs sateen, it's all in what you like I guess.

I like 100% cotton with the highest thread count you can find and want to spend. If you can wait until Black Friday, I have gotten great 700 count thread sheets at Target for about $30 and they were great sheets.

I stalk Target clearance. Not being picky about color helps! I got a great purple bamboo set last winter for 75% off (about $25). I also just got a whole new Thomas O'Brien set at Target on clearance. There is a lot of stuff there now. I like 300+ thread count sheets, either cotton or bamboo. Just feel them and see what you like!

I just bought DS microfiber sheets from Big Lots ($8 for twin) and they feel better than my 400TC ones.

ITA with the Egyptian Cotton. It does not pill like a lot of sheets do. And also, the higher thread counts are much better.

Try the JCPenney Home Collection sheets. We've been pretty happy with them and they don't break the bank.

I was watching a show about this one day (Martha stewart, Maybe??) Anyway it was really educational.

Buy 100% cotton - any polyester or other non-natural (rayon, microfibre, etc) fabric blends will pill; linen or silk won't but do you really want linen - yep I've seen them - argh! what nightmare to clean.

A higher thread count is important - but not as important as the fabric content. Better to buy 100% cotten 250 TC than 300 TC poly/cotton blend.

Sateen is the finish/weave - shiny and more slippery than percale which is more like the finish/weave on a men's dress-shirt.

A great place to buy sheets if there's one near you is TJ Maxx or Marshall's

I have gotten amazing 800 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets from both Tuesday Morning and overstock.com. I only have 3 sets of sheets so I think it is ok to spend a little more for high count high quality sheets. You spend so much time in bed;) you should be very comfortable.
