She left baby in car at post office!

I just got back from the post office. After I finished my duties inside, I noticed a car parked next to me. The car was running, no one in the front seat, but a baby in the back seat. I looked to see if someone was sitting in the back seat, nope. I am hoping the air conditioning was on. I got in my car, wondered if I should call the police. I thought I'd just wait a couple minutes to see if someone would come out. Just as I was about to pick up the phone and call, out came Mom. I looked at her, she looked at me. She mouthed something at me,opened her car door with out unlocking it, I rolled my window down. Long story short, I said I was disappointed she'd leave her baby in the car. She said she could see him, he was okay, mind your own business, etc. I just said it just took a few seconds for someone to take the car.
I am just shaking. Should I have called the police? Should I have minded my own business? Yes, the baby was fine- nobody took him- but what about next time? I also thought if she was being so defensive about it, that she must not feel good about her decision... hopefully....

I would have written down the tag and called the cops right away. None of this "waiting to see if she comes right back" nonsense. If she truly just ran in "for a second" she'll be back before I can finish dialing.

It's summer. She left a child unattended in an unlocked car. She deserves the harshest consequences available.

I can cut people some slack on a lot of things. Not this.

Wow. It's amazing people still do this after everything you hear on the news. I ran inside my house for like 2 seconds to grab my cell phone, leaving my 5 year old locked in the car in the driveway...and I almost had a panic attack. I never ran so fast before lol. I should have just taken her in with me. I can't imagine leaving a BABY in a car at a public place like a post office!

I would have been shocked and angry if I saw that. I think I would have called the police. People are so stupid!

The other night a woman was buckling her son and niece in the car at the supermarket when someone jumped in the driver's seat and took off with one of the children in the back seat!! Luckily. he noticed the baby in the back and stopped the car and took off on foot. It truly only takes a second for someone to jump in a running car and take off. Why would someone put their child at risk????

Some people should NOT have children!

I saw the same thing a couple of years ago at a box and mail it place. The lady came out a couple of minutes later too.

When I got home I called the police on the NON emergency number. I told her what happened and I did have the car info. She told me that I should have called immediately. The police would have responded "VERY QUICKLY" and there was nothing they could do now with that info.

I told her that I was sorry but I froze because I couldn't believe what I was actullay seeing. She says that it happens more often than is reported on the news.

I haven't seen this since.

I've seen things like this, and I'm half-tempted to jump in the car, drive around the parking lot, then come back to the frantic parent and tell them they're lucky it was just me, and not some wacko who did it.

Of course, I'd never do it... like I said, I'm just half-tempted.

I don't care if you can see your child, if you're inside a place of business, there is no way anyone could get to the car in time to stop someone from getting in and driving away. Duh.

Isn't that just disgusting! It wouldn't have hurt her one bit to take that baby w/her!!! yes...some people just don't realize or care how easy it is for their children and or car can be stolen!

I am sure we would all love to leave our kids in the car to run in someplace for just a second. Unbuckling car seats is a pain in the neck and by the time you get the kids out, you could be done with your errand. However it is wrong. There is no circumstance to leave your baby in the car unsupervised, with a car running, in a parking lot!!! It is everyone's business to speak up and do something because that child cannot speak up for itself. Imagine how many other people witness this and do nothing. Definatley call the police. If the car leaves, jot down the license plate. Every child deserves to be taken of even if it isn't by his/her own parents. I found out from my 6 year old that my husband left them in the car to run into a music store "just for a second". He then proceeded to tellme that he parked the car right in front of the store in a no parking zone. Can you imagine how much i ripped him apart for that. I don't know what the appropriate age is. ANyone have any input on that.

It is illegal here to leave kids in the car unattended running or not for any length of time. I'd call the police.

Just last night we ate at the Orlando Ale House just around the corner from Downtown Disney. The palce as usual was packed.
As we were leaving, just outside on the benches were 3 children. 2 were sleeping and about 5 and maybe 6 or 7 years old. On the bench next to them was another child about 4 years old and half awake. We started looking around in the immediate area to see if maybe the parents were nearby getting something from the car, etc.
When it was clear that no one was watching these children, my 18 year old stepped back inside and told the host at the desk about the children being alone. She came out and then stepped back inside. In the meantime. all kinds of folks were coming and going and passing these sleeping kids.
After a few minutes a woman comes out with a glass of wine in her hands and talks to the child that was awake. When I asked her if she was his mother, she said, "No, they are inside up at the bar, waiting for food." In that time the 4 year old starts to cry and she grabs his hand and drags him inside.
Shortly afterwards, 5 adults come out with a double long stroller, take the kids that were sitting in stroller out and plop the sleeping ones in and start to leave!
The hostess then starts to tell these people that this is a high traffic area and leaving the kids is against the law, etc.
Parents totally ignore her, one of the woman waves her off and they walk towards the Hyatt just across the road.

With 5 adults in the party, you would think that at least 1 could have stayed with the sleeping kids.

I would have called the police I won't even leave my 11 year old in the car when I am running in someplace. Can't even imagine leaving them when they are babies. I'm sure this was not the first time she had done this, and sadly probably not the last time.

Not only is it illegal to leave a child unattended in a car, it is also illegal (at least in Minnesota) to leave a running car unattended.

I would have called the police in a heartbeat. And after the comment to "mind your own business," I would have reminded the mother that she was breaking the law.

This happened at my sons DAYCARE the other day! This Mom was parked on the curb out front. I was actually right in front of the door, she was further away. Anyway I saw her load her 2 kids and then go back in the daycare to pay. It was 95+ degrees that day. And she left the car door open but the AC was not on. And there is no way she could see the car from inside. She had no idea if the other people in the lot were there to pick up kids or there to kidnap them. I just sat there in disbelief. She's not from this country so maybe its okay where she is from? But it sure isn't here in N.C. I should have said something to the director.

Since she really didn't care--I'm sure the police would like to know about it.

I would have called the police immediately. Get the license number, that way if she gets back before the police arrive they can 'visit' her to explain that she is a moron!

That is a good idea to put your car behind hers. Let her explain it to the cops.

The one and only time I left DS in the car I about had a heart attack. He was about 7 months old. I strapped him into his car seat in the backseat. I think got in and turned the car on, started the air conditioner and buckled in. Then I noticed I had left my purse in the house. So I got out and ran in to get my purse, panicing the whole time. Well to make matters WORSE I locked my son in the car with the air conditioner running. I paniced, and when I say paniced, I flipped! My son is in the backseat waving at me and just smiling and playing and I'm freaking!

I call the police and they say they will be right there. I think I waited 2 minutes (all the while DS waving and laughing and just having a grand time while I'm in tears) anyway no police in 2 minutes, I broke the glass out to get to my baby!

NEVER AGAIN, EVER did I even leave him in the car to do anything. That was 14 years ago and I still remember how scared I was.

That's exactly what I would have done. I would have blocked the car in & called 911 immediately!

My cousin & family just drove to TN on vacation. They brought their dog along. She was able to park right in front of this little diner type place & she left the dog in the car with windows cracked open for maybe 3 minutes. She said her husband just walked in to grab a drink & he quickly looked over a menu & told my cousin what to order for him. By the time her DH went back to the car (he went to put a leash on the dog & just walk him outside instead of leaving him in the car) & by the time he got to the car, a police officer approached him. The officer told cousin's DH that someone had called the police on them leaving the DOG in the car! Imagine a child!!

Luckily, the police officer saw that they had a bowl of water on the car floor for Fifi & saw that someone was out of the diner just a couple minutes later & he was reaching for the leash so the officer could tell that they had thought it through. He ordered his food but went straight back to the car & his DW brought out his food when her & the kids finished eating.

So if my cousin's dog merited a police call, surely this baby did too. Too bad the person that called the police on my cousin (regarding the dog), didn't see that baby in the parking lot! I'm sure they would have called even quicker for that!

You bet I call for dogs, too! The last time we did it, it turned out the jerk had an outstanding warrant so they arrested him on the spot! Served him right!
