Shark Reef

Heres something you can do to see if you'll enjoy Shark Reef.

1. Go to your bathroom.

2. Set yourself a bath using ONLY the cold water faucet.

3. Get in tub.

4. ENJOY?

GREAT on the free part! is it really that cold???

OH YEA!!! The water's like 50 degrees or so. It's VERY cold. I gotta say though I usually forget about the water temp. once I start swimming thru & seeing all the different fish & what not.

i would love for our son, who is turning 9 while were there, to experience this, but im afraid to now, since its so cold. what would you all recommend since you have done it?

He may freak out when he gets in & his entire body tightens up due to the water temp. so I'm not so sure I'd recommend it... not just yet, but then again it all depends on your son & if he (& more so you) thinks he can handle it. To this day it is still a very weird & at times scary feeling when you first get fully into the water & your body just tightens up! (not so much scary anymore, but it was when I was younger).

Well Im 27 yrs old and I started getting VERY nervous while in the shark reef. Basically I got in and the water was freezing, then I had an extremely hard time getting my brain to realize that it needs to breathe through the mouthpiece and not through my nose ( which is what we've all been taught our lives ). So basically one breathe through my nose fogged up my goggles and I saw nothing. You also have to swim to a certain area to be able to stop in the shark reef, and remove the goggles and get re-adjusted. I basically chose to just get out as quickly as possible. I may try it again in the future and hope I get better results, but I had a real hard time not breathing through my nose and fogging the glasses. :confused3

I actually LOVED that the water is cold - what's better than a cold swim in the hot Florida sun.

We LOVED it!!!! I didn't notice it being that cold. It was awsome!!!

My 6 year old ha went since he was 4 in shark reef........He hasn't had a problem.i think it is more like 65 or so degree water just feels colder cause we are like 98 degrees

I didn't notice the cold temps at all. It was an amazing experience. I loved it. Did it a bunch of times.

I think the folks that think it was cold may not have gone in the middle of the summer when that cold water feels refreshing. If you go anytime other than the summer that water is freezing. Lifeguarding in it for 45minutes isn't that fun either. I would have froze a lot except the guards working in the snorkel pickup area would make us hot water gloves!!!

We went in May and in October, and I really didn't notice it being cold! I guess that's because I was spent my childhood paddling in English seas!

Hoping to get a chance to do it again next trip. Completely spoilt with the warm waters of Castaways Cay recently, so maybe this time I will notice!! It's worth doing, there are so many fish in there.

At Thyphoon Lagoon, does it cost extra to do the shark reef? This sounds amazing.

It's not that cold...it's 68 degrees. Standard Ocean temprature for the creatures there. :cool1:

It is worth the cold. Take a underwater camera.

This is one reason I want to buy the waterproof shell for my video camera.

I did it last week and it's very cool. As Conan said, it's about 68 degrees. A bit chilly when you first get in, but your body adjusts to it very quickly. A few seconds after I had been in, I didn't even notice it being cold anymore. It was a very peaceful and calm experience...but it's also really quick. I was in and out within a few minutes. Definitely take an underwater camera...and if you forget one, you can purchase them there.

As much as I hate cold water, I didn't think it was that bad either. Maybe I didn't notice because it was so neat! I remember getting in the water & turning to DH, "Woo! It's chilly!" But once we got in, I must have forgotten. Too busy looking at all the little sharks! :fish: Plus, even if it is too cold, it's a fairly short trip to the other side (too bad it doesn't last longer). Give it a try!
