I'm looking for any info I can get about the Shark Reef at TL with a few specific questions...

any age/height requirements?

how long/far is it?

any snorkeling experience provided? My dd8 can swim, but I'd be more comfortable if she had a life jacket - could she use one?

TIA

From what I remember you can wear a life jacket, you don't actually swim, you float across and are not supposed to kick your feet. I am not sure about height restrictions but at the age of 8 I wouldn't be concerned about that.

You don't need any experience, they teach you how to breath etc., you have to remember that it is also salt water and it is cold. We always do it and enjoy it everytime. I think the best time to do it is first thing in the morning as by the afternoon it is really busy.

I don't know about age/height requirements but...

The water is very cold!
It's very crowded. You aren't supposed to kick your feet but people do and they kick you in the face.
The snorkle gear leaks because you don't have time to adjust it to fit perfect.

They do have life jackets.

There are no height/age requirements for the shark reef. Snorkeling equipment is provided as well as a life jacket if you want one. The above posters are correct in saying you can't kick, you can swim with your arms to get across the reef.

It is a non-heated saltwater experience. The reef is 100 x 23 feet in length and up to 10.5 feet deep. You must stay on the surface of the water and can only swim forward towards the exit, thus you can't turn around in the water.

And as of 4/3/06 you may not use your own snorkel equipment.

Hope this helps!!

My DD's were 8 last year when they did it. No small masks available for them at the time (heard these were available at least some of the time, but though we were there first thing in the morning, there weren't any), so they chose to float across the small pool on a little raft with a clear plastic view hole. This was "OK", and could be another option for you. Agree with cold and crowded (crowd picks up quite quickly after opening).
