Hi! We will be on our first ABD (Austria, Germany, Czech Republic) next July and I'm already worried about packing!

With a pre-night stay, plus the ABD, plus three nights in Budapest (12 nights total), I'm not sure how to pack enough clothing and keep our luggage to a minimum.

Is it ever possible to do laundry on the trips?

I've heard of "travel cubes", but I'm not really sure what they are - are they plastic bags that can be compressed?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

It's hard to know about the laundry situation, since no-one has done this trip yet. Some trips there *are* laundry facilities in one or more of the hotels. The Adventure Guides can also usually help you find a local laundromat if you really need to use one during your down time or On Your Own time.

I've never tried packing cubes, but I know a lot of people who swear by them. They are not compressible bags. They are square/rectagular pouches (usually with soft-sided square sides) that keep everything organized and contained.

Here's some packing cubes available on ebags:

Sayhello

Thank you so much! The packing cubes look great! I will definitely try them.

Thank you SO much! I just bought 3 sets! You saved me about $40!!! Thank you, thank you!

Oh Yay! It was perfect timing :) I purchased 2 sets this morning. I love organization and I think these are going to be great!

Laundry- if you look at the hotels websites (linked on the ABD website) you should be able to search to see of there are guest laundry facilities. If not, it is still well worth spending the money to send laundry out (this is true even WITH guest laundry - you are on a once in a lifetime trip for two short weeks- why do laundry- pay someone to do it, and enjoy your time!;))

We always pack lightly and send out laundry...here are my tips:

1- ABDs have the advantage of being tightly scheduled vacations; due to this I make a list with the itinerary in hand for each day. What I will wear each day, down to the shoes and accessories. Take into account changes for fancy dinner, rafting trips etc

2- I wear one color family; it's worth buying more clothes that match each
other before you go. If you spill on one piece the whole outfit isn't sunk, you just change out that piece.

3- likewise, I stick to 1-2 pairs of shoes. Good walking shoes or boots that match everything, and sandals or a second, dressier ( but still comfy shoe) depending in the season (winter vs summer)

4-plan for layers with outer wear, coordinated light weight sweater or fleece with a windbreaker/ rain proof jacket. This gives you three options, lite, rain, or warm insulated jacket. For potentially cold weather or season trips, I tuck a lite fleece head band and gloves in the pocket of the rain coat (Lands End has super lightweight ones in every color in the rainbow!)

5-rather than pay for pack cubes, I buy 2 1/2 gallon zip bags at Target. For the children, I literally packed their whole days outfit in one bag ( refill after laundry day) I labeled the bags with the day of the itinerary, and this made it easier and much faster for the kids to dress in the morning, especially on ABDs with so many early starts. It also allowed (ahem:rolleyes1) Dad to help with out needing to distract me with a billion and one questions (ladies, I think you know what I'm talking about;))
I make them put the dirty stuff right back into the bag, and that way their clean and dirty isn't all jumbled up in their bag, and laundry sorting goes quicker too.

For ourselves (adults) I pack underthings in one, socks in another and shirts, etc, so it serves as a drawer system right inside my suitcase, or whole bags can be removed without unpacking individual items. This is especially handy, with all the frequent moves in an ABD, it's much better to " live out of your suitcase" rather un pack and repack.

6- don't overstuff your suitcase- because you'll be " living out of it" and all your luggage will be handled for you on an ABD- better to pick a slightly less full roomier case so that you can quickly and easily find your stuff with out the major un pack.

These are my tried and true tips...hope they help! Good luck and happy packing!:thumbsup2

I am a huge fan of packing cubes, Marthasor, so I think you will be happy with your purchases. I used them for our Scotland ABD, and they kept everything compartmentalized, which kept my suitcase neat and made it very quick and easy to pack up for a new hotel. Plus, even though they don't compress your clothes, I definitely think they increase the quantity you can fit in the suitcase. (I definitely did not unpack at any of the hotels.) I put pants in large packing cubes, shirts in medium and things like pajamas in small. I also have some long, narrow packing cubes that are perfect for socks and underwear. I definitely plan to use the same system next summer for our Cental Europe ABD. As familygoboston suggests in her post, I packed outfits for my kids in individual large ziplocks. I did not specify a day for each outfit but just let the kids pick based on what they could see through the ziplock. For me, it worked out great because, again, it made repacking very easy and kept their suitcases free of mixed up clothes tossed in randomly. But it turns out neither of my kids (DD 11 and DS 9) was fond of this system, so I need to figure out a different one for them for Central Europe. Probably more packing cubes!

WOW!!! These are FANTASTIC tips!!! I'm going to do packing cubes AND zip locks! Love the color family idea! And I checked the hotels and it looks like I can send the laundry out when we are in the Alps or in Vienna, so that will work out well.

Thanks so much!

I can vouch for the ebags packing cubes. All 4 members of my family use them. DH poo pooed the cubes at first, but then he was able to pack for a week long business trip in a carry on bag using the cubes. The cubes more than proved their worth!

Bottom line...buy the cubes and roll the clothes. You'll be amazed how much you can fit!
