My non-military daughter whose family will come with us to DW in June are uneasy about Shades of Green (where we will be staying with our military daughter's family). She read on a website that it was gated and you had to show your military ID to get onto the property and she is fearful that if we all stay there, that when my military daughter is at the parks and she or her husband are at the hotel, they will not be able to buy anything or move about because they are non-military - how does it work for the "guests" of the military sponser to move about and purchase - does the military person have to stick with them the whole trip or can we all do our own thing at times and not worry about that aspect of getting on and off property, purchasing, etc - I know the sponser has to be there at check-in, but what about all meals, etc...

PLEASE...are there no SOG Suite people on these boards???
Also, do they have room service??? Can we rent boats at Poly if we stay at SOG???

Well when your military daughter checks you in, you will be given a parking pass for each vehicle that indicates you are guests of Shades of Green, so that will get them in and out of the resort parking lot, no problem.

Everyone will also be given room keys that indicate you are Shades of Green guests, so that should allow the non-military guests to eat in the restaurants.

We were with some eligible friends of ours (we were staying at All-Stars) and we walked from the Poly to Shades of Green to purchase some Universal tickets, and the only time ID was checked was when the tickets were actually purchased.

I don't know about the AAFES shops. Our friends purchased a couple of items at the AAFES shop, but I didn't notice whether they were asked for military ID or not.

We wandered all over the Shades of Green resort just to check out the remodel job and were never asked for ID of any kind.

Anyone can rent any watercraft at any marina on Disney property. You don't even have to be a resort guest, you just have to leave a resort ID, credit card, or Drivers license while you have the boat out.

No problem! We were there this summer and had 5 rooms of extended family members. Only 2 rooms of us were military. Everyone had the freedom to do what they wanted after we got them checked in. In fact, you don't even have to be there for them to check in as long as you get there first and the sponsor signs a paper at the check in desk giving them permission to check in. With their parking pass and resort ID they are free to use any of the SOG facilities, restaurants, etc. We even asked if they could shop in the AAFES shop and they were allowed to do that also. The only exception might be if they are buying their admission tickets at the SOG ticket counter. They say that the sponsor has to be there to show military ID, but they never asked for mine when we went with our guests to buy their tickets.

Does anyone know the hours of the ticket office at SOG? My mom will be late in the evening and I am wondering if I should go ahead and purchase a pass for her. We will be heading to Magic Kingdom early the next morning and I would hate for the office to be closed....
Thanks for any info!

Try the SoG site at: www.shadesofgreen.org

I seem to remember that the ticket office closed at 9, and maybe opened at 8- but the website should list it.

Have a great trip!!

One thing someone said about shopping at the AAFES store (mini-mart) guests can shop there, but you can't buy alcohol if your non military.

My mom and sister stayed at SOG in May. We visited them by just giving their names at the guard shack. We were staying at SSR so had a property pass but they didn't give us a guest pass or anything. We parked in the garage and parked for a couple hours.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Thank you all for your help! My daughter, when she called to make the reservations asked these questions as well and they said that even if we got there before her, if we had a confirmation slip, we could even check in, which I thought I had seen was not possible. We feel SO much better now about staying there...We have stayed off property, at CBR twice, Dixie Landings twice (now POR) and thought it would be nice to try something new!
