Just wondering if it is worth the extra money to stay at the Fort Wilderness Cabins over SOG? I have stayed at SOG and it was okay - the location was great for the price. We have 3 kids and looked into the cabins in FW. For 9 nights it is 3645.00 with the meal plan... SOG for the month of MAY has a rate of $89.00 per night - that of course is without a meal plan. You still get the other perks of disney like the extra magic hours... Just wondering what your thoughts are on the cabins and if I am missing out by not having the meal plan?

Also for those who have stayed at the cabins how is transportation to the other parks?

Also wondering if any of you have suggestions for something off disney that has easy access to disney.. we are driving

Thank you Heidi

Hi Heidi,

We've never stayed at SOG because DH likes to stay away from the military when on vacation. ;) The first time we went to Disney we stayed in the cabins and got an amazing military rate (I think $130/night). We stayed there because we wanted to save money and cook our own meals, and it's perfect for that. If you got the dining plan, there really is only one sit-down restaurant on property (Trails End) and it's quite far from the cabins, so I can't imagine going there every morning for breakfast or anything. You'd have to take the internal buses or rent a golf cart (the quickest method). You're not allowed to drive your car around Ft. Wilderness...only to and from your cabin/campsite.

We loved the cabins because our boys were young and took a nap every day. It was nice that there was a separate bedroom and we were able to watch TV or cook dinner while they slept.

If you decide to stay in the cabins you'll love Ft. Wilderness. We decided to buy a travel trailer after our cabin stay so we camp there 2-3 times a year now. There's a ton to do there but the campground is huge. If you don't rent/bring a golf cart, you will have to take Disney buses around, which can be time consuming. Some of the loops are huge so you would first need to walk to the bus stop, wait for it, then take it wherever you're going.

As for transportation to the parks, we loved that we could park right outside the cabin. We drove to the parks (Epcot, HS, AK) because it was quicker than taking the bus. If you do take the bus, you have to take the internal bus to the front of the campground, then transfer to the park bus so that could potentially take a lot of time. If you're going to MK, the quickest way is the boat. You would have to take the internal bus/golf cart down to the boat launch, then the boat directly to MK. Much easier (and a nicer trip) than driving.

If you have any other questions, you can always send me a message. :)

I have to admit that I tend to put the $$$$ considerations pretty close to the top when choosing resorts, but let me say this: we haven't stayed off-site in many, many, many years. It would be a real let down for me if for some reason we couldn't stay on site.

With a rate of $89/night, I don't think you can beat staying at SOG. Cheaper than a value with a MUCH bigger room and nicer amenities. And since you have your car, I assume you would be driving to all of the parks except MK, so that kind of evens out the playing field transportation wise.

With only paying $89/night for accommodation you don't need the dining plan. It wouldn't save you any money at all, I think when you consider how much extra a cabin +DDP would cost compared to SOG + paying OOP for meals. And honestly, for a lot of people the meal plan just isn't a good fit with the way they usually eat.

Let me get this right, You are paying $3645.00 for 9 nights including food at FW. And are paying under $800.00 for just lodging...$2845.00 for 9 days worth of food is what you are spending for the food difference. I am not sure if you all spend over $300.00 a day on food but to me it sounds like a lot..
