Sexual Offender moved in around the corner....

If you know his name and where he was arrested then it wouldn't be that hard to google him and find out the charges. I know a kid that had sex with his 15 year old girlfriend. Her parents found out and pressed charges. He is now labeled a sex offender for having sex with what is now his wife.

And this is why there needs to be seperate standards. I can't imagine how he must feel about his in laws. Because of them he won't be able to be as involved of a father because of that label.

I was 15 when I started dating my DH, he was 20. We have been together for over 20 years. We wern't doing anything illegal at the time but I am sure it didn't look good to some. Thankfully my family could see we were made for each other so this sort of thing was never an issue.

Hopefully we are going in the direction of seperating these guys from the truly evil ones, though i tmight not help this guy with the laws being that they were when he was "caught."

Really???

I do have a DD12 and 2 DS, I don't know for sure but I'm willing to bet that this wasn't a case of an older person dating a younger person.

Plus it doesn't advise of the person gender, it could have been a male or a female.

We have a sex offender registry that you can look up online. It tells you exactly what the offense is, where they live ( you put in your zip and it gives you all the offenders living/working in your area ) and where they work, all with a picture.

I agree. I would be concerned-not barricading my doors, but I would make them aware of the issue.

I think the biggest fear is the ones that you don't know about..

I am honestly less worried about the registered one that is say, 3 miles away, then the ones that don't get caught.

That said, I don't live my life with the kids being all crazy worried about all these things. You won't be able to function. You be aware, teach them to be the same and be sure you and your neighbors are watching each other's backs

No the flyer states his birthday and the conviction date and he was 25 at the time of conviction. I know, rarely, there are people who get stuck with this lable. I've worked for the local sheriff's office so I know the process in which they get labled, but this guy was 25, no excuse for him.

Conviction date doesn't mean he was 25 when the offense happened. People may not report this until years later. It could have happened when he was 18 and it took that long to actually get a conviction for whatever reason.

That's just horrible. There should be a way to reverse those charges and get that label off his record. That's not even close to the "fine line".

in at least one state there is a way to get a person in this situation at least off the registry-if their conviction was for prior to age 19, then 2 years after they were required to register they can petition the court for removal. if the conviction was for after they turned 19, then they have to wait 10 years to petition. there's a criteria for what kind of offenses a person had to be convicted under to even apply for this-but it very definatly includes situations where the sex was consensual but because of one teen's age it fell under the state's lowest level statutory rape classification.

IMO the offender registries are a tool not a death sentence to your neighborhood or the safety of your children.

I too worry more about the ones that do not register or that have never been caught than I do the ones that are abiding by the law and registering. The risk they take to register can be astounding.

The sex offender laws IMO need some serious overhauls. In my position as an HR director I have run across more than one who were convicted by parents pressing charges or in one case a girlfriend who lied about her age. I spoke with the young mans Parole Officer and the PO confirmed. The girl lied to him about his age, she admitted she lied, her parents pressed charges and he is forever branded a sex offender. The system is seriously broken when teenagers need to "card" their dates.

ITA, the system needs an overhaul so that the serious offenders and child predators are the people reported. It weakens the entire system when you add in the numerous people in their teens and early twenties that are reported for being involved with a willing teenage participant.

Absolutely and a reporting system that was put into place to help protect people has lost a lot of credibility just based on the parameters of who/what make up a sex offender.
Whenever I am interviewing I always ask what Tier they are. That helps a bit, a Tier I is not a major concern to me but a Tier III I am more likely to investigate further.

I think its sad that the young man in my example can never coach his kids baseball team or volunteer in his childs school should he choose too.

Also and I am shooting off the hip here, does the age for sexual consent vary from state to state. What might be legal in my state could be illegal in your state and so a sex offender here is not a sex offender there etc????? I am not clear, just speculating.

Yes, the ages vary widely from state to state. Some states also have rules that do allow for people of similar ages who are dating (some will say the age of consent is 18 but if the other person is no more than 5 years older it is okay, or any one of a number of other clauses). It is crazy.

Age of consent varies from state to state. But if the other person is over the age of 18, it brings in a whole different light.

Say a 14 and 16 yr old do it. Then the punishment isn't as harsh. If a 16 and an 18 yr old do it, then it can be really bad for the 18yr old because they are considered an adult and the 16yr old is a minor.

I think most ages of consent are around 14-16yrs old.
