severe astigmatism contacts cost?

My DD has a severe astigmatism. She has been fitted for contacts and will be stating a trial. Does anyone have a ballpark idea of what a six-month supply would cost?

I asked the Dr. and she said they are custom made because of the severe/unusual nature of DDs astigmatism and she wouldn't know until the free trial arrives what the cost will be.

These are soft/disposables, custom contacts for severe astigmatism.

I don't want to get DDS hopes up if we can't afford it.

It's been forever since I had contacts, but I have horrendous astigmatism and couldn't get disposable contacts. I think mine cost about $250 a pair. I'm sure if you google you can get a better idea.

I have astigmatism and I use Bausch & Lombs SofLens 66 extended wear contacts. They are regularly priced around $40 per box.

I have regular astigmatism lens. I use Soflens Toric 66 and they are $32.49 a box from 1800contacts.

Compare this to my daughter's contacts which are regular (no astigmatism) Accuvue Advance which are $24.99 a box.

I'm not sure what custom made contacts would cost. I didn't even know they custom made them!!! Good luck.

I have to have toric lenses for my astigmatism as well. They are more expensive than most "normal" contacts. If you go to 1800contacts.com and search for "toric", you get get a rough idea of how much they cost. They will probably be more expensive if you order them directly from the eye doctor, but legally he should give you the prescription if you want to shop around. I have also found good prices at Sam's Club if you happen to be a member.

I know that the ones that I have are supposed to last 2 weeks for each pair, but my doctor said they were fine to last a month. That may help the intitial sticker shock.

My DD has one eye that requires toric lens. We get them from the eye doctor at $60 per box which is six lens. She is only supposed to wear them for two weeks at a time, but it sometimes get stretched to 3 weeks. If your DD needs them for both eyes, it would cost at my doctor's about $240 for six months.

I see several of you buy from 1800 contacts. The one time I checked there it looked like you had to buy multiple boxes (like a full year), and DD's eyes change too quickly for ordering a year+ at a time. Am I looking at the site wrong--what is a typical minimum order for you??

I also have severe astigmatism. I was recently fitted for contacts because I wanted them for my wedding. I was first given contacts that are the extreme moisture type because my eyes are very dry. These were $90 for a 3 month supply. After my success with those the Dr. advised I try the custom contacts for severe astigmatism because the first pair I was given was not strong enough for me. So I was going to try those until they gave me the price... $400 for a 3 month supply!
I am told that my astigmatism is worse than 99% percent of the people who have it so maybe your DDs won't be as bad!

There are 6 pairs in one box. You are supposed to wear each pair for 2 weeks only. So that would be 12 weeks worth of contacts - a 3 month supply. My doctor advised me NOT to wear these longer than 2 weeks.

I buy only one box (per eye) at a time (my prescription is different in each eye). When you first put in your order, the website automatically puts in 4 boxes per eye. but you can change the quantity. I buy one box per eye at a time because you can get 750 Mypoints points each order. If you have $50 or more, you get free shipping. My 2 boxes cost more than $50, so I get free shipping. DD's contacts are slightly less, so I buy a 4 pack of contact solution with her order to get over the free shipping mark. This way we get free shipping AND the solution is cheaper than what it would cost in the store.

Do you have any idea the brand name at all? I work for an Ophthomologist, and I would say that it will probably be around 40-50 dollars for 6 lenses. Depending on your DD's needs, that might be as little as a 6 weeks supply (for one eye) or as much as three months depending on when she needs to change out lenses.

Our Rigid Gas Permeable lenses are usually $76.00 each, and are worn for years possibly, (though during your DD's developmental years she may change as often as every 6 months) so in the long run might be cheaper, any reason why they don't want to do that? Soft lenses are more comfortable, but if she starts out with Gas perm it might be your more affordable option. Less air to the eye, so not usually recommended. If she has that bad an Astigmatism, Gas perm is usually the best option for specific eye needs. Toric soft lenses are the best for eye health, but they only make so many lenses.

What is the number for the astigmatism?

When mine was 3.00 they were $90 for 6. Each eye was different so $180 each time (Wal-Mart prices). The 6 pairs normally lasted a year with no issues because I have very little protein buildup and I use enzymes. My doc also used the word custom for them, it just meant they didn't keep them in stock.

Then my eyes totally shifted this year and now it's 2.25 or 2.5? That puts me into normal people contacts at a whole $30 an eye for boxes of 6. I am suppose to sleep in these (which weirds me out and I don't do) so they last much longer than the month they are suppose to.

I know why they don't want to give you a price for the contacts before the free trial is up. If they switch lenses it could be totally different and cost more/less.

My first set of contact 19 years ago cost $250 for A set. You bought insurance for $30 a year to replace a torn lense for $50-ish. I remember the first time they handed me boxes of multiples, I was like are you people crazy I can't afford these!

Don't know the brand- but the doctor said she only knows of 2 brands that will make contacts for a prescription like my DDs. She said- none of the brands that you see advertised will make them in her prescrip. I am going to go find her prescrip and post it here.

30 days sounds right, it all depends on her eyes and what sort of build up they produce. Does Toric 55 sound familiar? I think that is what I was buying?

I am not sure- but thanks for mentioning the name Toric 55. I found a web site and was able to plug in her prescription and get a price. None of the other sites let you put in such a high prescription. Very helpful

it was just under $200 for a six months supply. She only needed the really expensive special contacts for 1 eye. They both have astigmatism but only the right eye needs the custom order contacts.

I think that is 2 boxes for each eye- the contacts are good for approx 30 days.

Much better than I though it would be. DD is SO happy!
