Wow, I was checking craigslist to look for an extra weekday job /volunteer position and found several ads up for households hiring an extreme couponer but only if you save them at least 75%-90% off their grocery bill. Pretty cool if you love to coupon and shop you could get a job doing just that. Not sure how they are expecting 75-90% off each time though.

At risk of sounding harsh, this is what happens when stupid and/or greedy people watch too many shows on television.

There are two important things that make their expectation unreasonable...

NO legitimate couponer makes 75+% off on any kind of regular basis; on rare occasion, maybe, but not frequently or reliably. (To be clear, I am excluding those who use coupons fraudulently)

Secondly, I get the feeling they're expecting someone to be able to find a way to buy exactly what they'd normally buy, but for less money. The most substantial couponing is when the grocery list is matched against the coupons, not the other other way around. Even then, what one buys with the coupons is rarely with enough breadth to cover the diversity of an average family's eating habits.

The ad was posted by someone looking magically spend just a few dollars to get a substantial savings... the equivalent of getting something for nothing. Bet they haven't hired anyone yet.

I can't imagine being a personal shopper would be very profitable to the couponer. The savings are great but it's so much work. And so many stores have such low stock that most couponers have a difficult time finding enough stock for the deals for just their household.

Wait? They want to pay someone to save them money at the grocery store? Am I understanding that right?

Why not just save the money you were about to pay someone?

I'm confused...

That's why they were looking for someone "only if they can save 75-90%" off the bill. I guess the idea is "Pay someone $50 to save $150 off my grocery bill". Good luck with that... ha.

That lady who cheated on Extreme Couponing used to charge people to learn her system. Perhaps that is what the people on craigslist are looking for, someone to teach them rather than actually shop for them.

It would seem to me that it would be 'win win' if some extreme couponers allowed regular people to "shop" in their storage areas.

The couponers could sell say toothpaste for 75 cents each (assuming they got it for free or practically) - they'd make money and the person "shopping" the storage area would get a deal.

I think that's exactly what will happen - and then when the extreme couponer cannot save them the 75-90% off (because its not realistic), they refuse to pay the person - and reap any benefits of the extreme couponer's efforts to date.
