settle a debate I'm having w/dd -

The style right now is for them to sit more on your hips.

Depends on the skirt and how it is cut. Some are meant to sit at your natural waist and some are meant to sit on your hips, just like jeans.

I agree. Most of the more popular skirts with teens now (around here, anyway) are made to sit at the hips, but I've seen some very fashionable high-waisted skirts lately, too.

well the 2 skirts we bought are pencil skirts.

The 2 fits her perfectly on the hips but is too big if its on her waist. The other skirt I think is an XS & seems like its the exact opposite - Oh I can't remember - we debated it for a while & now I can't remember which is which!

I think pencil skirts are made to sit higher up.

I'd go with the 2 then.

pencil skirts are made to sit at your waist, and accentuate your curves.

Yea but how can you tell 'cause jeans say it on the label- skirts don't

I can't tell if I've got her a skirt that supposed to be on her waist that's too big so it sits down on her hips....

UH OH ! Might need to take 'em back then - cause we don't need to be accentuating any curves @ her age! :rotfl2:

the look in the photograph is what pencil skirts are meant for, however they fit her body type and however she's comfortable is whats important though. but pencil skirts are meant to sit high.

our debate has been actually if its supposed to cover the belly button or not...:rotfl:

This is the 1st year she's ever question clothes (I've been very lucky) so I have to turn to y'all for my answers since this is all new to me! :thumbsup2

Does it look good sitting on her waist, or is it oddly shaped or poochy? It it looks good on her waist, it doesn't really matter what it was designed for. Skirts that are supposed to be on the waist generally look bad if they're so big they slip down to the hips - the seams don't work out correctly.

Probably. Does the skirt look unflattering to her body type? That is the real question.

Pencil skirts are really made to show off curves. Now you can maybe get away with wearing them on your hips if you are TALL because the skirt will look in proportion. However it will kill the curve look and have a boxy appearance. But a very tall person can pull that off.

A pear shape person is not a body type suited to a pencil skirt if that makes sense, you would go with something that does sit on the hips because you do not want to accent the curves obviously.

Hope that helps.

It depends on the cut of the skirt.

My waist is tiny in relation to the rest of my body--so I have to buy skirts that rest on the hips. This is b/c the waist will be wayyy too big. Also--my waist sits a bit high and a high skirt on me would look ridiculous.

I find that my dd's think that everything should sit on their hips b/c they are so used to their low waisted jeans. If I tell her to move the waist up she tells me "It's not the 80's Mom" :rotfl:

This is how I am too. I have a 26 inch natural waist and 38 inch hips. I have a pencil skirt on today and the waistband is sitting right over my hipbones.

Go with what she is comfortable wearing as long as it doesn't look funny. Have her dress up in the complete outfit she would wear - shirt, skirt and shoes and see if her proportions look off.
