Very scary thing happened with ours. We have a kitchenaid microwave hood combination installed in our lake home. On Sunday, after the kids and I had already left for our other home, but while DH was still there, the microwave turned itself on and WOULD NOT SHUT OFF, no matter which buttons DH pushed or even when he opened the door. The only way it stopped was when he unplugged it. It will stay unplugged from now on. Googling the problem (because nothing in the service manual addresses this odd issue) shows that many, many customers have had the same problem with this microwave...and still (more than 18 months after it started showing up on the internet) no recall or notice has been sent to owners of these microwaves. I am furious that a company could be that cavalier with the safety of it's customers. Some of the stories on the internet are seriously scary...people coming home from vacation discovering their microwave melted (!!!!!!), or other people finding them running and so hot to the touch that they wondered why they weren't flaming. It happens spontaneously...in the middle of the night even.
If you have one, PLEASE unplug it now and keep it unplugged unless you are using it. If you know a friend has one of them, please let them know.
They are sending someone out to inspect and repair it (free of charge...which shows you they know something is seriously amiss here...the microwave is well out of warranty at this point). Still not sure I would ever leave it plugged in again. Too scary, IMO.
I shudder to think if it would have happened even an hour later on Sunday. DH would have been gone, and no one planned to be back till this Saturday morning.
I have alerted the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and am also trying to get local media interest. It's the only way that I can think of to get the message out to other owners.
