Well, I'm now certifiably insane, though anyone who's read my other trip reports probably already knows that. :lmao:

In my pre-trip report for the August visit, I mentioned the unqiue nuttiness of attempting to plan two trips to Disneyland at the same time, and now it's official, so I begin this trip report, mostly to see just how wacky things can get as I attempt to plan two separate trips with entirely different casts and very different dynamics at the same time.

So, our story actually begins last September when my little sister got married. Upon learning that my sister's husband had never been to Disneyland at Christmas time, my mother began to think about taking a family trip to the Merriest Place on Earth so our newest family member could experience it.

So, for a few months now, we've been in what I will term "loose discussions" about going to Disneyland at Christmas time. My mother has always wanted to see the Candlelight Processional, so we targeted what we think will be the processional weekend as one option. Of course, all this depends on my brother in law being able to get the time off work. And so last week, we began serious discussions, which resulted in my brother in law asking about how much time he could take off.

Once the serious discussions began, the insanity steps in, hence the title Serenity Now, Insanity Later. When you first contemplate a trip to Disney, there are moments of excitement and serenity, but they are soon replaced by feelings of feeling like you're taking crazy pills here. And this one is no diffferent. Hence, the Seinfeldian title.

So, here's the cast and the source of the insanity.

Me. Mild mannered accountant by day, Jedi Knight in search of his Princess Aurora by night. As a toddler I could spot the mouse from 100 yards away or so according to family legend. My parents took me to Disneyland at 2 years old because I was so obsessed with Mickey and cemented it all.

My father: Also a mild mannered accountant by day who is teaching me the family business. When I was but a padawan he would read me bedtime stories from a Disney storybook. I can still recite some of them from memory.

My mother: Along with my father bears responsibility for my Disney obsession. She hung a Mickey poster in my nursery before I was even born.

My sister and brother in law: They'll be married a little over a year when this visit happens. They're the reason for the visit, so it's always revolved around their schedule.

My brother, sister in law, 3 yo nephew, and 9 mo old niece: My brother works with me and my father, hence the family business. My nephew was 7 months old when we went to WDW in 2006 and was a lot of fun. He especially enjoyed eating characters noses. Now his uncle attempts to "corrupt" the kid with Mickey & friends and the story of a brave prince fighting a dragon to save a beautiful princess.

Insanity struck last week as we attempted to tenatively determine prices for 3 nights and 2 days versus 4 nights and 3 days. We learned that packages always begin with 3 day park hoppers. Also, there's been some question as to whether or not my brother's family would come join us, so we were attempting to obtain quotes for all sorts of possible party outcomes. To further complicate matters, my annual pass means that I don't need park tickets, but will need a place to sleep(unless Disneyland allows me to sleep there every night:rotfl2: ) so we have to factor that in. It's been crazy.

And so today, the official word came. While stopping by the office, my sister told us the dates were settled, so I busted out last week's planning sheets and began to run new scenarious including my brother's family which was unsure last week.

I've literally lost count of the number of scenarios I've run in the past week. We've looked at early December, mid-December, and post-Christmas December(which would add two more college attending siblings to the group). We've also examined the RV park vs. hotel rooms, and then had to account for savings on eating food in the RV with high gas prices vs. eating in the parks, et all and staying in a hotel. Got all that? Nope, well that's okay, neither do I since we're also considering separate hotel and park tickets since that can work out better sometimes ;)

So, we quickly realize that even before without my AP discount, it would be considerably cheaper to stay in a hotel because of gas prices for driving the RV down to Disneyland, so we quickly began to look at hotels. We've also looked at assorted prices and thier respective proximity to Disneyland on account of wanting as short a walk as possible but knowing that one car would have parking courtesy of my AP.

In the end, we quickly realized that every park package was a considerable savings for our group. With park tickets for the non AP holders totaling $1,300+ alone, package became the only way to go. So, now we turned to AAA, Costco, and Getawaytoday.com(which I found out about from the DIS). With package quotes, we began to do hotel research to find out about the hotels that we were looking at, which made for more insanity.

So, in the end, we narrowed it down to a package from Costco and a package from Getawaytoday, with a roughly $200 difference between the two. Costco is more expensive, so we're going with Getawaytoday, right? Well, not so fast. Remember that our group will have one 3 year old and he's dictating(albeit unkowingly) our thought process.

How is the 3 year old dictating our strategy? According to GAT, the package contains one magic morning in Tomorrowland while Costco has one magic morning in Fantasyland and one magic morning in ToonTown. Considering that Tomorrowland's signature attractions are easily fastpassed except for Nemo and that Fantasyland is only empty late at night near park closing, we decide that early entry to Fantasyland is better than Tomorrowland. Once you throw in the character breakfast, preferred seating on select DCA attractons, and Disney gift cards through Costco, we decide that Costco higher price is a better deal for our circumstance.

Throughly confused yet? Well, so am I. We're going to book in the next couple of days as my brother needs to make sure his family is confirmed. So, if they don't come, than we may be back to reexamining our package choice. So as of right now, there's only one question. Am I insane yet?

Insanity later is defintiely the way this thing is looking. So, after getting confirmation that the dates were good, there were complaints about the very dates selected. So, others started looking at Thanksgiving weekend, which is opposed by a few of us for roughly the same reasons.

So, as of right now, the grand family visit is very likely cancelled. I'm okay with it. Sure there are things that won't happen on this visit, but the cancellation of the grand family visit doesn't effect my plans to go down.

I've talked with my mother and she's expressed interest in joining me for the visit since she also really wants to see the Candlelight Processional. So, for the time being, the big cast has been reduce to one with a possibility of a second joining us.

My nephew, with no coaching or prompting frequently announced tonight that he was going to see Mickey at his house, so the on again, off again trip may be on again, only moved back a week so we would be there on Thanksgiving.
If this happens, I'm likely ending up with another trip to Disneyland since I'm bound and determined to see the Candlelight Processional.

Have I ever said how much I love having an annual pass?

Another update here is in order. Perhaps speared on by my nephew's excitement about going to see Mickey at his house, everybody finally explained their preference for certain dates over another, so we got down to brass tacks.

We looked at going over Thanksgiving or going a week later for the Candlelight Processional. As it turns out, it's substantially cheaper to go in the first week of December as opposed to Thanksgiving, so after everyone talked it over and thought about the assorted consequences of the two travel dates, it's been decided.

We're going down in December! The trip has been booked and a down payment put down, so we can start planning.

How does seating for the Candleight Processional work? How much do the tickets cost and how many can I get with my AP? I get the impression from some that the only way you can see it is if you have tickets, yet I thought that it went down Main Street so everyone could see it, but those with tickets had a better view.

My brother decided to order the Disneyland planning DVD and received it recently. I was watching my nephew last night and we started to look at the map. He's very excited about riding the train and a pirate ship, but I made the mistake of telling him that if he was a good boy he would get to go on a train. He decided that half an hour later, he'd been a good boy for long enough and wanted to go on the train immediately.

So yes, he's excited and everyone's decided that we're not going to give him any more details until after Thanksgiving.

Ok, I'm getting jealouser and jealouser with all these trips you are able to take! I'm happy for you and all, but dang! I want to go again too! :sad1: Could you use your jedi mind trick to make my boss give out another fabulous bonus this year? That would help a lot!:yoda:

*waves hand in front of your boss' face*

You want to give daisybelle more time off and a raise so she can go to Disneyland again.

Awesome. Thank you! I guess that means I can start planning! :cheer2: Hmmm...which hotel to try this time...

How exciting! I love Disneyland trips with a big group of my family members, the more the better!

And off topic, but I absolutely LOVE your avatar!

Thanks. I'm such a huge Disney/Star Wars geek that I actually bought one of those Sleeping Beauty dolls they sell in the park and turned her into an action figure by giving her a lightsaber. I also bought one of those Jedi Training Academy badges they sell because the title listed on the badge was "Princess." Someday I'll give it to my princess(my badge says Jedi Council Member) and we can wear our badges proudly in the parks(assuming my princess doesn't mind being seen with such a huge geek :rotfl: )

I'm totally going to do that to my Sleeping Beauty doll!!!

Aww, that's cute!

I should warn you that you may get some strange looks and/or comments from people. My little sister still can't quite figure out why I gave Sleeping Beauty a lightsaber. My mother, on the other hand, finds it funny.

An update on this trip front. Two days ago, we booked our first(and possibly only) dinner reservation for this visit at Goofy's Kitchen. The package comes with one free character meal and after studying the different character meal choices, we concluded that my 3 year old nephew would likely enjoy Goofy's the most. The only characters he's really familiar with are the Fab 5. There was brief discussion of what fun he might be to see him flirt with the princesses, but the only princess he might recognize is Sleeping Beauty on account of his uncle telling him the story of the brave prince who fought for the girl he loved.

Gee, I wonder which uncle told him that story?:rolleyes1

hi! I hope you don't mind a brief intrusion... this is actually travelmel but I'm trying to get 10 posts done on my DDC's new account so that she can begin her own TR that she's been dying to do!

Thank you so much and I'll post from my own account soon!

An update of sorts to this PTR. My brother and sister-in-law are traveling for Thanksgiving to see family and my brother will do a work seminar right after Thanksgiving. What this means is that they're now likely flying into SoCal now instead of driving. And since my sister and brother-in-law can't leave until roughly 6:00pm, we'll need someone to pick up one family at the airport the night everyone arrives. It's been decided that I should be the one to do that since I have an AP, so it looks like I'll head down that morning so we have someone in the SoCal area to pick up the travelers and keep myself entertained in Disneyland while waiting for their flight to arrive.

I think I can deal with that. ;)

Hi there

Just wanted to say I am enjoying reading your pre-trip report. You write really well, and thanks for sharing.

Hope that you all have a great time.

Thank you. When's your upcoming trip?

And the flights are booked, so I get an extra day in Disneyland. Woo hoo! :cool1:

Are you going to do any of the tours Disneyland offers? I think I might do the Holiday tour.

I've been thinking about the holiday tour. I honestly didn't expect it to happen this trip on account of most of my family being there, but with the extra day suddenly coming into play, I'm giving it stronger consideration. The only trick is that I'd have to do the tour the day I arrive and since I live in NorCal, I can't have anything set in stone on that day aside from picking up my brother's family at the aiport, but that will be in the evening.

I don't know how I felt about the holiday tour. Some parts of it where neat, but it really wasn't anything special. :confused3 I'm sure if I had kids with me, they would've liked it. Then again, I didn't have a very good tour guide so that could have been part of the problem.

I'm talking about the Christmas tour, not the Halloween one. I hear the Christmas one is really good.
