For my birthday DH is taking me into the city for dinner. I'm thinking for dessert, I'd like to go to Serendipity. I know everyone raves about their frozen hot chocolate, but I'm wondering what else is good there (other than that $1,000 sunday!). I also saw on the menu that they serve regular food too - how is it?

TIA
Sarah

Bad - really overpriced and totally a "tourist-only" place. If I recall, they were even closed by the Health Department at one point in the last couple years. Yuck.

If you want a good dessert, my reccomendation would be either go to a restaurant with a fabulous dessert menu (Blue Water Grill - or any BR Guest place) or go to Max Brenner's. He's a chocolatier, but has amazing chocolate-y desserts and a good size menu of options (with table service). I go his place in Union Square often and am never dissapointed.

I love their chocolate crepes with bananas and strawberries :lovestruc I think the only "real food" I've had there is a BLT, and it was fine. Have fun and happy birthday! :goodvibes

Second vote for Max Brenner's ... if you have a choice.

I just looked at that Max Brenner's website. Its WAY overpriced, but seems really super yummy too. I'll have to keep it in mind. I've been to Union Square about a million times, eaten at that Heartland Bruery (sp?) but I've never seen this place. Where is it in relation to that??

TIA

I was just about to post this. It was closed for roaches, lack of cleanliness and possibly rats. :scared:

I happen to love eating at Serendipity. My kids too! Last time we were there we sat next to Whoopi who was eating a hot dog! Their regular food is just OK. Dessert is special. :)

Frozen Hot Chocolate and Hot Fudge Sundaes are really good.

Here is the $1000 Sundae, I do NOT get the appeal but I was told they do sell it.:confused3

Enjoy your Birthday! :)

I was going to suggest Max Brenner also. He is a master chocolatier and worth the trip. There are also two other suggestions depending where your coming from. Jacques Torres has an awesome chocolate shop and in Brooklyn Doughnut Plant is amazing. Check out their websites :cloud9:

I've had the frozen hot chocolate a couple of times and it reminds me of Alba a frozen diet treat my Mom used to have when she needed to watch her weight. Not that great.

We got the frozen hot chocolate and hot fudge sundae, also. Very yummy! Be prepared to wait a long time, but don't forget to walk the couple of blocks to the candy store(I think it's Dylan's). The kids loved that store. As for over-priced, isn't everything in the city?

Thanks for all the replys guys.

I know of Jacques Torres and his chocolate - amazing! My only issue with his stores is just that - they are stores and not sit down restaurants. I think I'm going to pick Max Brenner's. Acording to mapquest, its 1.66 miles from where we are having dinner - that will be a good walk to help burn off all the calories we will be consuming! I just hope I can get DH to go with me - if not, I'll be leaving him behind!!
