September 2011 Disney Dining Reviews - Updated 4/7 - Breakfast @ the Wave

We had those onion rings a few weeks ago at Pecos Bill's. The ones we got weren't overcooked like yours, but they were super greasy. My DS(8) and I split them and they indeed are very filling. It's hard to find an excellent onion ring at Disney World.

I've always liked the ones I've had at Flame Tree BBQ in the past, but the last time I had those, they were really greasy too.

Sci Fi has the best that I have found so far..followed very closely by Beaches & Cream

I've had the ones at Sci-Fi, they are good, so are Prime Time's. Never tried the ones at Beaches and Cream, I almost subbed rings for my fries when I was there, but I didn't.

Hey, I am finally caught up again - real life, especially the beginning of the school year doesn't leave too much time for DISlife sometimes. ;)

You know, I really had to  when I reads your MM review - I had the same salad and the pears were really ripe and sweet and there was enough dressing on mine too - I tell you, it changes the whole salad! :thumbsup2

AND, I had the same dessert - the panna cotta and I did NOT like it! :sad2: .......... and for me to find a dessert I don't like is VERY rare! :rotfl2:

Thanks for the info on the onion rings at PB - didn't know that either. :confused3

Maybe I'll try the salad again next year, I think I'm going to end up eating there again for the FDP, and none of the other appetizers really appeal to me that much.

After a few hours in my room I headed back to Magic Kingdom for Wishes that night. It was about 5:00 when I got back, so I decided it would be a good time for dinner.

I decided to go to Cosmic Ray's, and try their new vegetable sandwich.

At this point I was still trying to eat completely vegan, so I ordered it without the chipotle aioli, otherwise I had it as it comes regularly, though I'm not sure if the bread is completely vegan. If it's the same type they use elsewhere on property though, it should be.

Service here was good, but apparently they make the veggie sandwich in a different area of the kitchen, so it took awhile to get. While I was waiting almost everything else I saw looked good, including the Greek salad, which I should try sometime, it looked fantastic. The new beef salad however, did not. The beef that was on the one I saw just did not look like good quality beef, plus it was cooked really well done and looked dried out. It just did not look appetizing at all.

My sandwich, however, looked awesome.

It had zuchinni, cucumbers, peppers, onions, lettuce, and tomatoes, with some kind of balsamic dressing. I'm not really sure how chipotle would've worked with balsamic, and I don't like really spicy things anyway, so I'm glad I had it without that, because I really liked it the way it was. The veggies were fresh and refreshing, and the bread was pretty good too. The fries that came with it were pretty good too.

It was actually a pretty nice day this day, and I ate it outside with a nice view of the castle. Plus it was relativly quiet there compared to inside.

Now, as you know I am not a vegetarian, but that sandwich looks awfully yummy! I might be VERY tempted! :goodvibes

It was good. If I have to be honest though, the best looking thing I saw there was the grilled chicken sandwich, but who knows how it tasted.

Later that evening, shortly before the Main Street Electrical parade started, I decided to get myself a treat from the Plaza before going to one of my usual viewing spots for Wishes.

I had a root beer float with tofutti ice cream. I can't really tell a huge difference between real ice cream and the non-dairy kind, especially when it's in something like a float.

It did take awhile for it to be made since they keep the non-dairy ice creams seperate. It's not even in the immediate area, and for any special order, they must go back to what I assume is the table service part of the Plaza's kitchen for it.

When I did get it though I thought it was very good. I don't have a picture, (ice cream does not photograph well in the dark,) but I'm sure most of you can imagine what it looked like. The ice cream was nice and creamy, and it was a very refreshing treat that I enjoyed while watching the Main Street Electrical Parade, (not nearly as good as Spectro Magic in my opinion,) the Memories and You castle show, (which I think is a very cute addition, and I love the lighting effects they use on the castle for it,) and Wishes - which is always a major must-see for me.

Subbing.....back to read now :)

I meant to work on my reviews some over the weekend, especially now that I'm getting into meals I enjoyed more, but I had family visiting over the weekend, and I wasn't feeling that well on top of that, so I had a pretty stressful weekend. Don't get me wrong, I love my family, but when I'm with them 24/7, they can get annoying, especially when I'm not feeling that great, and would rather stay in bed all day.

Anyway, on my second full day in Disney I swore I'd start with breakfast since I did not want to have a repeat of my first day, and not eat, and then be starving and need a snack, and then eat more then enough, and skip my lunch again.

For some reason I woke up at 4:00 AM this morning, and I wasn't able to really fall back asleep, so I spent the next three hours just kind of laying there, and dozing off and on, before finally getting up around 7:00.

I got ready quickly and headed down to Everything Pop for breakfast. Unfortunatly, not eating meat, and trying to be vegan, but not wanting any special treatment, I didn't have a whole lot of options, so I went for the obvious safe choice, a cup of fresh fruit.

Yeah, I know I'm boring.

The fruit was a mix of grapes, honeydew, and cantaloupe. The grapes and cantaloupe were good, very fresh, the honeydew seemed a little hard and underripe, but was edible.

So all in all it was fine, but really, fruit cups are available everywhere on property, and it's really hit or miss I've found to how good the fruit is.

Okay, and now for a much more interesting review - Tusker House! I was very excited about this meal. This was the first meal I had booked after planning my trip, and I think it's the only ADR I didn't change at some point.

I spent the whole morning at Animal Kingdom, though I didn't do much before lunch, just Kilimanjaro Safari and Expedition Everest, and I saw a showing of Festival of the Lion King. I also noticed, while walking to and from Africa and Camp Minnie-Mickey, Pizzafari's new breakfast menu, which sounded so good, including a breakfast panini, and a spinach and goat cheese frittata. I really wish I had eaten breakfast there instead of my boring fruit at Pop. Hopefully they still have the same menu next year.

My ADR at Tusker House was for 11:30, which is when they open for lunch. It does take them awhile to get started on seating I've noticed, I guess this is because the breakfast diners are still finishing as the lunch diners start arriving, and they have to completely clear the room of characters and change over the buffet. I have read however, that starting in December I believe, that lunch will become a character meal as well, which to me is dissapointing, since Tusker House was somewhat a hidden gem, and a real bargain at $21, and you know that becoming a character meal will change that, plus for dinner, I'd rather eat at Boma.

Anyway, my server here was nice. She sent the chef out to walk me through the buffet and show me what I could and couldn't eat. The chef was nice enough, however I think I expected too much from reading other's experiences, as I wasn't offered anything for dessert, and I wasn't offered any veganized versions of anything. Also, the chef told me the samosas, which I was looking foward too, were not vegan. Apparently then have some kind of egg wash on them.

On to what I could, and did, eat;

On my first plate I had, going clockwise, green beans, what I think was the saffron-infused cabbage, white rice, pearl cous cous, tandoori tofu, marrakesh cous cous, and roasted potatoes.

The green beans were well cooked, though they were just that, green beans, but at least they added some color to my plate, the cabbage was tasty, but not something I needed any more of, the rice and pearl cous cous were both fine, but pretty bland and boring. The tandoori tofu was tasty, but I thought the tofu seemed a little dried out and over cooked. I make a very similar tofu dish at home, and while the taste is pretty much the same, I like the texture of the tofu I use much better. The marrakesh cous cous was very flavorful, it had some interesting spice combination in it, and was very tasty. The roasted potatoes were delicious as well. Though they were "just potatoes" whatever seasoning they used on them was really good, they were cooked well, and I just really liked them.

Aside from more potatoes and marrakesh cous cous on my second plate, I also raided the cold side of the buffet. This time I tried, tabbouleh, some kind of grain salad, hummus, mango chutney, and dried fruit chutney. I also had a plate with a pile of pita bread to use for all my dips and stuff, but I apparently didn't take a picture of that.

The tabbouleh and salad were good, but honestly if I didn't take pictures of my food, I probably wouldn't have remembered them. The hummus was good too, better then the hummus at Everything Pop, but still not as good as the kind I eat at home, (seriously Sabra hummus, some of the best stuff ever.) I really liked the two chutneys I had. They were both kind of sweet, but not overly sweet. The dried fruit one was especially tasty, and had things like raisins and dried apricots in it, and I think I also recall some figs. It was just really good.

I was dissapointed that there was no dessert option for me, though I suppose I could've just had some more fruit. Or some more chutney, lol, but by that point I was pretty full anyway.

Overall I really like Tusker House, but with the coming inclusion of characters I won't be hurrying back. Though dinner will still be character-free, I'd much rather go to Boma given the choice for similar food. Though considering I probably will go back to eating fish anytime I'm in Disney, and I know from last year's trip the salmon at Tusker House is excellant, maybe I'll eat here again. So for me Tusker House is really a high maybe, which if you know how I am with ADRs, means it will be coming and going off my ADR list daily.

Joining in! We were at Pop for some of the days you were there but in the 50s section.

Glad you enjoyed Mama Melrose's.

Wow your vegetable lo mein certainly is missing the main ingredient! :lmao: We tried the onion rings at Peco Bill's and agree that they were good.

We also had a breakfast ADR at Tusker House and agree that I won't be hurrying back. It's a shame that there were no desserts that you could eat.

Joining y'all ! (I'm New York born and raised, but live in Texas now - can I say "y'all" lol ? Great reviews !
