So after reading about how great Keurig coffee makers are, I decided I wanted to try some kind of 1-cup coffee maker. I'm the only coffee drinker in the house. I make about 1/2 a pot in the mornings since I take a big cup to work with me. In the evenings, I sometimes want a cup and can't justify firing up the big coffee maker. However, I didn't want to pay the price for a Keurig right now.

I searched Amazon for 1-cup coffee makers. I read all the reviews and decided to try one by Hamilton Beach that was only $14.99. It uses Senseo coffee pods and I also bought the refillable pods so I could use my own ground coffee. When it arrived, I was excited to make a nice cup of coffee. Well, it was way too weak. It was like colored water. I used two pods and the maximum 12 ounces of water. I tried cutting down the water and it was still too weak for my taste, even using two pods.

Since the pods look just like tea bags, I got the idea to try using them as such. I put two in a large cup and poured boiling water over them. After about two minutes, the coffee looked nice and dark so I took them out and added some milk. OMG it was the best cup of coffee! Just dropping the pods into a cup of water worked so much better than using that little machine. I've been making it every night. I use 1 pod for a smaller cup and 2 for a larger one. I'm even thinking of taking some pods with me on vacation and making my own instant coffee in the hotel room. I can boil the water in the hotel coffee pot or microwave, add my own pod and have better coffee than I could make in a machine.

If you have any Senseo pods lying around and don't like your machine, try dropping them into a cup of water. Take them out when the coffee looks dark enough. It's a quick, easy and relatively cheap way to get a good cup of coffee.

Good tip! I have a Senseo coffee maker but it frequently leaks water. :confused3 I have been using the pods in a small 5-cup coffee maker. I'll have try your hot water tip.

I use my Senseo to make tea. I buy Tetley British blend tea bags. They fit the Senseo perfectly. Makes a perfect cup of tea!

Maybe it's the HB machine instead of the Senseo, but my machine makes OK coffee when you just want a single cup of coffee. I buy Baronet mega pods, they have 12g of coffee in them versus the standard 10g. I've used the actual Senseo pods before, but didn't really care for them. Again, it makes OK coffee in a pinch, but it comes nowhere near my Cuisinart Grind-N-Brew, but we only use that if both DW and I are home (mostly Sunday Mornings).

Ditto, on the leaking. DH is the only coffee drinker in the house. And it's usually one or two cups on the weekends. So, the senseo was a great idea. But that sucker leaks everytime. Now I've got 2 or 3 bags of unused pods that I just can't make myself throw out.:lmao:Because, as my Dad used to say..."I paid good money for them". And as for that darn senseo, that I will throw out. I got it for free anyway. From a tip I received on the BB!

Another great tip from the BB...Thanks OP!

I got that same deal, but I have had no problem with my Senso. I'm going to continue to use it until it breaks and I can get a Keurig. Hmmm! I wonder if DW would be suspicious if the machine happened to fall off the counter?

wait.....OP are you saying- use the pod in a cup with boiling water- and the coffee tastes 'real'???
I wonder if you could do this while traveling, like the starbucks via-only less $$$
is the coffee like this really good?
