Rep. John Culberson, TX claims the "stimulus" bill must be urgently voted on today -- because Speaker Nancy Pelosi is leaving at 6:00 PM for an 8 day trip to Europe!

Culberson made the charge on Houston's KSEV radio.

Pelosi is hoping to lead a delegation to Europe; there's a meeting with the Pope and an award from an Italian legislative group.

Calls to Pelosi's spokesman went unreturned.

In the rushing, Democrats have now broken their promise to have the public see the $790 billion bill for 48 hours before any vote.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) predicted that none of his Senate colleagues would 'have the chance' to read the entire final version of the 1,071-page bill before it comes up for a final vote.

Number one rule in life is never sign or vote for something you haven't read. It is a sad day for the American people because we don't even get to truly voice our opinions.

I was reading about this last night. Apparently they voted 2 days ago that the spendulous would be posted on the internet for the public to look over for at least 48 hours prior to any vote, additionally the bill would be made available to all congressmen and senators for at least 48 hours prior to any vote. They announced last night that they would be voting this morning and while many lobbyist had copies of the bill most congressmen hadn't received it yet . How on earth can they vote on this without a clue as to what they are voting for??? I hope with all my heart that they get many many more no votes because of this, but like you said they don't care and will likely just pass it .

I doubt many bills ever get fully read before they are voted on, in all administrations. Do you think they will sit down and read 800 pages. They have staff members going through sections for them and reporting on it but I'll bet no bill is ever actually read by a voting member of either party. This tells me that the language is way too complicated and leagalesque.

I'll probably will get flamed for this but I think people really need to start looking outside the two party system. We need change or the government is going to distroy the US. People need to wake up and see how the government is destroying the US and taking the citizen's rights away. I fear what the country will be like when my children grow up.

In the last election I voted against every single incumbent, all the way down to school board. It doesn't matter which party. I will continue to do so until the voters wake up and do the same.

It seems impossible for some to offer the slightest criticism of their preferred political party. This rationalization is just ridiculous. It is ok to support the legislation. However, anyone who cannot see that this enormous and complex bill is being pushed through under the cover of darkness is in complete denial. Don't you think that some responsible citizens might want to take a look at this and have the opportunity to contact their respective representatives? This is not the transparancy we were promised.

We need to repeal 2 U.S.C. sec. 2 and have term limits!! Then we will have hope and change.

You're right. Maybe they should change the rule to make it a 7 day waiting/review period for all legislation. Overall, the language should be clear enough so that everyday people could understand what was being written, even if they didn't have a law degree. Unfortunately that 's not the case.

I did read my entire financing contract for my house and my car. It would have been foolish not to have read it.
