Sellng Antique Furinture

OK, this is not Disney related, but folks on here sell a LOT of stuff LOL

I have about 8 unmatched cane bottom chairs and an OLD kitchen/dining room table that I need to get rid of. The table has to be 70 years old and the chairs are very old. My Grandfather used to pick them up and recane them and he died in 1968 so I have no idea how old they are?

What would you do? Suggestions are welcome. (I am not trying to sell them here I don't deliver! LOL!)

You could try putting an ad in a local paper or a flea market if you have one locally. I'm not sure about finding out the value, but if you call around to some higher end furniture stores they may be able to give you the name of an appraiser or they may have someone there that does it. Or maybe an antique dealer?

I am thinking I will call around to find either an antique shop or a consignment shop. Value isn't the real issue. They are REALLY uncomfortable chairs and I fianlly have my Dad's blessing to dump them!

It's true! You can find anything on EBAY. I have a few of these!

Look in your phone book for auction houses nearby.
Then call & describe what you have to sell,
and if they're interested they will set up an
appt. with you to look at them.

Just be aware that you're probably not going to get much from an auction house. We spent all day Saturday at one of these and I was amazed at how cheaply the furniture sold. There were a couple of bedroom suites that I would have bought in a heartbeat if we weren't already overflowing with furniture.

The chairs may only go for $5 or so each. And the house probably gets a cut. I'd try to sell them on my own before I let the auction house try them.

Of course, if I were lucky enough to have anything like that to remember my grandpa by, I'd hang onto it, even if I never sat in the chairs.

There are two housefuls of furniture my Grandfather worked on. That was his hobby. I am sitting a a desk he made, beside me is a table he made, upstairs are several more tables etc.. I am moving to a condo and don't have room for it all and no one else wants it. (And this is just what we took out of my Grandmother's house, my mother has an ENTIRE house full. Two beds, chairs, desks, tables the list goes on LOL!) I figure I will keep a few chairs but not all of them (9!)

I am not inclined to go the auction route. I have some newer furniture that is not going to move either and there is a consignment shop near here that I think I will go talk to them about taking everything. I am trying to reserch some prices which is why I am not watching that EBAY auction.

I sold my antique furniture when I got married (I had an older home and our new house was new, so I wanted new furniture). I took the easy way and did the auction route, after the fees I really didn't make much. I had sold some things with an ad in a paper and did much better. An antique shop will sometimes have someone that can appraise your things.

What a marvelous blessing! My Dad was an orphan and had nothing from his family. When my Mother's parents passed, the antiques were all scarfed up by one family member. I have nothing from either side.

My husband does have a couple of things we treasure. There is a sofa with lions heads on the arms that is very uncomfortable, but interesting to look at. He also has a bed that belonged to his grandmother and a door from an aunt's house.

I was just telling him after the auction that our kids are going to have fun selling off our assets when we die. We've accumulated some pretty nifty stuff, but none of it has much sentimental value. I added one more stained glass piece to my collection. If I keep it up, I'm going to run out of windows to hang them in.

Actually the chairs don't mean as much to me since he just caned them. The other stuff he made which makes it very special. I am very lucky! (Don't have a clue what I will do with it all, I just pray my Mother lives a LONG time LOL!)

Hi Carol!
I know there are several shops in Goodlettsville that would probably 'show' your chairs. Most of the shops take a 10-15% cut of the selling price. Also (trying to dig into my memory) - as you exit from 65 to go to Greer Stadium, there are some store fronts there as well that might sell your chairs for you. (Heading south Exit 65 - turn right - go LEFT at the light, instead of Right.)

Thanks. I think next week when I am in town I may come some places in Franklin since I live down that way. WE will see.

I think Finders Keepers would take the entertainment center and coffee table.

I know I could advertise them myself, but I am single and just don't like having to let strangers into the house!

You are right - Finders Keepers will take your newer stuff. There should be plenty of places in Franklin that could help you out. The other place I was referring to is between Brentwood and downtown. Not sure if that is an easy area for you to access or not.
