Selling broken TV at yard sale ?

We have an organization in our community that teaches adults with "disabilities" to repair things. They take donations of electronic items that need repair.

Maybe you could do a google search and see if you have something comparable closeby.

It's worth a try and might make you feel good in the end.

I like FREE part. We took a computer monitor like that and DH got it to work. HOWEVER, we would have *never* paid for something that we knew ahead of time didn't work and then have to pay for the repair too. By the time I got done doing that, I could have just bought a brand new one.

We would have to pay to get the TV taken away by the trash, so if we could get it taken by free - that would save us a few extra $$ that way for the extra :mickeybar

Well, I bought a 26 inch Magnavox TV that works fine at a garage sale last summer for $25 AND the seller told me to bring it back if I had any problems with it when I got it home. I think asking $25 for a broken TV is too much, but good luck if you can get it! :thumbsup2

Please Please Please DO NOT donate a broken TV to goodwill or the Salvation Army - I am good friends with the manager of our local SA and she has to throw out broken electronics all the time - AT THEIR EXPENSE.

Please be responsible with broken items - you bought it - YOU need to pay to dispose of it - meaning give it to someone who can use it (or sell it - though I seriously doubt it will sell for $25 - I like the "make an offer" idea) - or pay to recycle it. Please don't make non-profit organizations pay to discard your broken electronics (they will NOT sell broken items!!)

I can go to the thrift shop and buy a nice tv that size working for $25-$30. It would probably cost quite a bit to buy the parts to fix the tv, and if it is older, they may not even sell the parts anymore. I wouldn't put $25 on it, either free or make an offer.

Just a thought rather than tossing in the trash.. Maybe you have a tv repair place closeby that can recycle the parts.. I have a computer/tv repair place around the corner and thats what I do when I have a tv that goes out.. Personally I wouldnt take the time or money to fix it myself as its easier to buy a new one I like better.. but this way maybe someone can get some use out of it.. I also do the same thing with used appliances that go out such as washer, dryer, frig, etc.. I take them to a local place that fixes and repairs.. they can use the parts..

I've held more garage sales over my lifetime than you could shake a stick at and my advice would be to clearly mark what is wrong with the tv and then add a sign that says "Make An Offer".. Odds are VERY good someone will buy it.. I have sold more broken items that way than non-broken items.. There are certain buyers out there who look for just that sort of thing and are more than willing to pay for them.. You may not get $25 - but odds are you WILL get something for it and not have to deal with the hassle of disposing of it yourself.. ;)

I would put a sign on it that states" "Free to good home - needs repair" and if anybody asks what is wrong - briefly explain what you think the problem is. If they are willing to haul it off, let 'em have it. :thumbsup2

We put a "free" sign on an old freezer once and it was one of the first things to go. We just wanted to get rid of it and didn't want to haul it off ourselves. Come to find out, old freezers are perfect for storing paint in, at least according to the man who took it. Just wire in a light bulb to keep it warm inside and you don't have to worry about your paint freezing in your garage over the winter. Who knew? :confused3

Personally I wouldn't buy it as fixing electronics usually cost almost as buying the item new, but someone may buy it.

I think $25 is too much to ask for it but you never know.

Good luck either way.

Wasn't your yard sale this weekend?? What did you end up doing? Keep us posted!!!
