Today I took about 15 books and a Spongebob DVD to Half Price Books looking to sell them. All of the books were in great condition. They offered me $2.25 for the lot. I decided not to sell them. I figured if I sold them at a yard sale for 50 cents a piece I would make way more. What has your experience been with them? It just seemed like a really low offer.

Wow. The last time I took in two bags of DVDs and books they gave me $50. I usually get around $10-15 for a paper grocery bag of books.

When half price books opened by my house a few years ago they paid a lot. Now they pay next to nothing.

It very much depends on what you have and what they need.

In my area children's books get 10¢ if they take them at all.

Half Price has a great summer reading program for kids up to 14. Read 15 minutes a day, get $3 store credit each week.

I've never been happy w/what they've offered me either and end up selling my books at garage sales or on eBay.

I agree.

If you look around the store and see the good deals they have on books etc, remember that they paid less than that to the original owners...they have to pay rent and workers somehow!

I have been out of luck with them because I inherited book club books from my mom, and they will not take them. But then I sold a ton of wedding books, and made some cash, and that was nice.

It really does depend on what you have. But generally they pay between .05 and .10 per paperback. We took 7 bankers boxes of books from my dad's house (That's only about a 1/4 of what he has) and his stuff was good enough to warrant over $150... Which doesn't seem like much, but I was happy to get rid of it.

Also make sure they actually do donate the stuff they won't resell. Some Half Price's just tear off the front cover and dump the books in the dumpster.
