I know this topic has been posted and discussed before, I just can't find the thread now. :confused3
We'll be going to Disney w/our 7 & 4 y/o boys in November. We had planned on renting a double stroller when we get there, but since I saw the prices of rentals jump through the roof--it's about cheaper to buy one. We have a little umbrella stroller, but I realized today after walking in our local March of Dimes walk, that an umbrella stroller isn't going to cut it for us. The 4 y/o was cramped, there was no room for the small amount of things we had on the walk, I can't imagine all the junk we'll be toting when we go to WDW. DS4 is not a very big guy, 35 pounds now (maybe a few more in November) and fairly short for his age.

What's a good stroller for us that won't break the bank, will be big enough for DS4 and will have a good resale value when we're done using it (which should be right after the trip since we're not stroller people anyway, just need one for the walking at Disney).

TIA

$80-100-- not a ton of storage but very comfy for a bigger child (goes up to 55lbs). Invest $20 in the Maclaren stroller organizer and you'll have an extra storage bag, cup holders.

Resale is phenonmenal.

Mac Volo. We have two. DS fits very comfortably. He is 4.5, 35 lbs and 42 inches tall.

He had outgrown our smaller umbrella strollers too, but he is always fighting to ride in the stroller when I am somewhere alone and have just dd riding. The resale value is good too. I figured we will use it for disney and be able to still sell it once we decide he is done with strollers....

Third vote for the Volo. There's a guy on ebay selling them for $74.99 (shipping included), and a website - babye-store.com, maybe, also $74.99. You can google "volo 74.99" and it'll come up.

I just ordered 2 from the Ebay guy, and they were at my door 48 hours later. Macs have AWESOME resale value in my area (I was actually trying to buy a used one for DS4 since I'll only need it for Disney, and jeeeeez, talk about needing to pounce quickly!). If you have a local Craigslist, do a search for Maclaren's and see what people are selling them for to get an idea.

Have a similiar problem DS is 61/2 yrs odl (he finds the half very important to share) and he is 52 inches and 68 pounds, but I know he will need a stroller and the rental cost is absolutely crazy. Any ideas for my very big, little boy!!!

I am with you Jack's mom. My DS5 is a big one too, 62 pounds and he has low muscle tone so his endurance is poor so we need a stroller for a big boy too. I would appreciate suggestions as well.

I just heard the Volos don't recline............

What about their front wheels?? How are they?? That's the worst thing about an umbrella stroller---when the front wheels don't turn well.

The Maclaren Triumph was the best investment we have ever made. All three of my boys fit fine in it - even my 90th % 7-year-old. It reclines. Pushes like a dream even with the oldest in it. When shopping, it seemed obvious to us that you get so much more for the money with the Triumph than the Volo. I bought ours in late summer '07 when the '06s were being closed out. Paid $89 each (we bought two and use stroller connectors when only one can push)

Macs can turn on a dime. They are great and it feels like you are just gliding on ice when you push them. You can also push them one handed- even with a heavier child in them. My 9 year old can still ride in our Volo with no problems.

Check to see if your local target has the volo or if you have a babiesrus near by check there as well. I don't know about the volo b/c I know the wheels are different for my techno but I am confident that it would hold a child in the 60 pound weight range w/ no problem. I would however like to suggest to the OP taking a look at www.abbf.com they have a twin jogger that can hold up to 100 pounds if you are okay w/ toting it around some its just another option. They do have other items and maybe more cost effective to rent from them thant disney. Also check craigslist to see if you can get anything from there at a decent price.

OK, first, I want to say I am NOT one to criticize putting an older child in a stroller, but in November do you think your 7yr old will be riding a lot in a stroller? I only ask because we took our 7yr old niece a few years back and she didn't need one. Now, last summer I did buy a jogging stroller for my tall ds who was getting too big for his umbrella and dh was getting tired of kicking the back wheels on it all the time. I found a really decent deal on a Dreamer Design Manhattan Lite on ebay when they were being clearanced out for the next years model. It's bulky for carrying on and off the busses but ds (45" tall) is comfy in it and it's a dream (no pun intended) to push, even one handed. It cost us about $180 inc shipping. but we've already broken even if we compared to the cost of renting and I imagine we'll get a few more trips out of it. DS turns 5 this month but he also has muscle tone issues and tires out easily. We were with his older cousins on the last trip (a few weeks ago) though and because they were walking he wanted to be a "big boy" and walk a lot too so I am hopeful that our stroller days at WDW are coming to a close sooner rather than later.

I've posted before about how much I love my Maclaren Techno XLR (it's the big Mac if you go to Babies R Us). It holds up to 65 pounds. My 5 yo ds is 51" and 57 pounds and fits in it without looking squished. (When we put him in the Mac Volo he looked uncomfortable. ) He has several inches of headroom so we can use the sunshade.

We bought this stroller off eBay specifically for our October trip. My 5 yo has special needs (overstimulation & panic attacks in crowds among other issues - I know he'll need a place of his own.) I like that the sunshade can unzip several more inches for really good coverage or a quiet space - then the clear window that's usually on the top makes a little window for ds to peek out.

We also have a buggy board we put on the back (for when I'll have the two little boys by myself). Even with the 57 pound ds on the board and the 30 pound two yo ds in the stroller, this Mac still steers like a dream.

If you can, go to Babies R Us and look at all the strollers. It helped confirm our decision for the Techno XLR. I'd already made my mind up though as this was the only stroller I could find that would hold up to 65 pounds. I did add two of the Valco Universal Cup Holders on the handles (an idea from the Dis) & love them as well.

The downside - the stroller is 44 inches long when folded up and weighs about 17 pounds. (It does fold up like any other umbrella stroller). We'll be checking it at the airport in dh's travel bag for his golf clubs as I couldn't find any other stroller bags that would hold such a long stroller.

Like I said before, we got ours off eBay for around $200. It's a 2006 model.

For what it's worth-

I took my girls 5 1/2 and just turned 8 this past November and my 8 year old rode it the double alot. Now she is healthy and lean, but it is still hot and alot of walking. I take them myself, so I like too the idea they are confined a bit... it is less worrying on me as to them getting separated from me. Even just to sit in it to watch a show like High School Musical and have that added shade is really worth it. Everyone does what they feel is best for their family.

It sounds like what you need is space for the 4 year old and "stuff", not so much for the big kid, right? I found that a smaller stroller and a backpack worked best for us because one parent can take the stroller and the other can take the backpack. This was especially important for us because my husband is tall and the stroller pushing always fell to me. Having him do the pack mule protion helped a lot. :)

I absolutely agree! I have an almost 5 year old and we will be taking our Maclaren Triumph. I love this stroller. It has a basket underneath just the perfect size for a small cooler and I love the fact that it reclines. Very hard to find in an umbrella stroller. We also bought ours online and paid less that $100 for it. A great buy!

This is some good information.
We are going in August with our now 7 y/o.

I know he is going to need a stroller, but was hping to find one a little cheaper.

Unfortunately with strollers, you really get what you pay for - you can squeak by with a cheaper one for a lighter child, but once you need it support over 30 pounds, options are limited. Good luck!
