Sell costumes on Ebay or at Garage Sale?

My church is having a garage sale next weekend. We pay $20 for a parking spot and table and then we get all that we make.

I have a lot of big stuff to sell - strollers, little tikes things we have outgrown, etc.

But there is one thing I am not sure if I should sell there or on ebay - it is my kids Halloween costumes. I think we have about 10 Disney princess costumes to sell and then some Toy Story and pirate costumes. Would they sell better on ebay than at a garage sale? If you sold them at a garage sale - what would you sell them for?

If you live in a non-rural area, you might get a better price for them on Craigslist.

What condition are they in?

Since you are going to the Church garage sale next weekend, bring them. If you can get rid of them there first (even for a few less bucks than eBay) do it. Costumes go well on eBay, but then you have to pay eBay fees, paypal fees and you have to ship them. Craigslist you need to meet people which can be a pain sometimes.

Look on eBay and Craigslist to see what they are going for. I would price them separate and offer a discount if they buy several costumes.

Also, is there a kids resale or consignment shop near you? Try taking any that don't sell there. Costumes sell well at the one where I drop off (Childrens Orchard).

Costumes at yard sales usually only go for $5. Check what they are worth on e-bay some are only worth 5 or 10 bucks but others go for a fortune.

I had a toddler dinosaur costume that looked like barney in reverse and I had made removable wings so it could also be a dragon - it sold for $55 :woohoo:. I paid $10 for it on clearance two years before.

Another costume I listed never got any bids and it was a Disney Store POTC costume. :rolleyes1

Gymboree costumes sell for what they went for new sometimes more - I've made $20 profit on used Gymboree costumes.

Be careful with Children's Orchard. The one near me only buys outright and doesn't pay anything so I avoid them. They offered me 50 cents for Gymboree clothes with the tags on. Similar clothes were hanging on racks for $10/ea.

I was wondering the same thing. I have a Sleeping Beauty and a Snow White costume, is Ebay the best choice? Not trying to change the subject.

I have always posted mine on Ebay and gotten pretty good prices for them. I listed one on Craigslist once and this guy was harassing me asking if I could ship my daughter to South Africa. (What a perv) The costumes I have sold have been from Lillian Vernon and are pricey but on Ebay I have always gotten a good return.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I just made consignment/resale appts last week. I see you are in MA, which Orchard did you go to since I was going to a different location next time. I had a good experience first time at one in Central MA, $230, just last month was $70. The is no way I had 1/3 the stuff! I was guessing $100 to $125 and nearly fell over when she told me the amount. Next time I am watching them ring in the items!

Have you had good luck anywhere? I am willing to drive to get rid of the stuff! I just made an appt with a store in Leominster for baby sizes & maternity, Kid to Kid in Natick for the *better* stuff 2T and up.

I think if you market them nicely at the garage sale you could ge a good price. Hang them up and place all the accessories in a ziploc bag. Put a lisiting off all the pieces included and original price paid so others know what a good deal it is. Also clearly mark with a price.

I sold mine at a garage sale. Nice ones I paid $30 for went for $8, cheaper ones sold for $5 and ones with obvious wear were $3. Most were Disney princess dresses. I sold 9 out of 10 costumes in the first hour of my sale last September.

I went to milford (I'm not sure if they are even still there - it's been over a year). They gave me ridiculous prices - I would have done better at a yard sale. I've never been back. I'm not sure if the first time you go they give you good prices and the next time they don't or if it's the more established the store the less they offer you. But either way I got HOSED. I almost listed on e-bay that time but thought I'd take it easy on myself and not spend the time photoing, etc. Next time I spent the time - I was the one getting $5 - $10 per piece; about $4 - $8 after expenses but still way better than Children's Orchard. Great place to shop not so great place to sell IMO.

I would check Ebay to see if you have any that are going for good money. If not or if there are tons of the same ones I would try the garage sale.

I say check Ebay first because two years ago I bought a Sebastian Costume from Disney Store at Goodwill for $5, none of my kids ever wore it. They were going for really good money on Ebay so I sold it there. I also bought a Marie at the same time and they were only selling for about $10 so I sold it at a consignment shop for $6 to save me the hassle and fees of Ebay.
