Selfie stick

I know that selfie sticks are against the rules in the park and we follow the rules. We would like to take one to take our picture outside the front entrance of both parks and around DTD. We are from east coast and will probably never go to DL again so we just want pictures to have. If we use it outside and put it in our backpack, will they take it away from us at security check? Just wondering if we need to buy a cheaper one for then and throw it away before entering the parks.
Thanks!

If they let you keep it past the security check point, they have no way of knowing you won't be using it on rides (which was their real reason for banning them). DTD is now inside the security zone.

Photopass will take your photo with your camera, so at least you can have them take one for you in front of DL. I don't think I've ever seen PHotopass outside the gates at DCA. But lots inside the park.

Security checkpoints are well before the park gates (even before they moved them, they were still before you go into the Esplanade). I would guess you won't be allowed to take it past them.

The security screening now happens before you enter DTD. They will confiscate the selfie stick or make you return to your car or hotel to store it elsewhere. I would recommend to ask a park guest or employee to take your picture for you.

Extendable sticks aren't allowed. The short ones that do not extend are.

I despise both but the actual rules are always nice to know.

The areas you're talking about are inside the secure area. If you have an extendable stick you won't be able to take it through.

For a better picture and a fun smiley interaction with a fellow guest, ask a passerby if they'll take your picture!

As people have said, they will take them when you go through security, which is well before you get to being in front of either park or DTD. The last couple times I've gone I've seen them sitting on the security tables after being taken from people.

It's so easy and fun to find other guests and CMs who will take your photo, both in the parks and in DTD. You shouldn't have any problem getting tons of photos at DLR. And don't forget to return the favor to your fellow guests -- we do that all the time. :)

Thanks for those who truly answered my question without any opinions. I do understand and appreciate that others do not like selfie sticks, so when I use it I make sure it doesn't infringe on anyone else. I figure if it isn't against any rules and I don't get in anyone else's way, it shouldn't matter to anyone else.
It is very good to know that security is before I even get to the entrances and includes dtd. I didn't know that. I do know that I can get others to take a picture but, due to issues I have, I have a hard time doing that. It is also good to know that the non extendable selfie sticks are allowed. I really wasn't even aware that there were any that didn't extend. That will be sufficient, I think, for the pictures we want and should solve my problem. Thank you!

Also an FYI, there is a screen on the DL app that shows where Photopass is. Not sure if it's completely accurate, but it's a great start if you are looking for as many photographers as possible.

If you check Amazon there are quite a few non-extendable options. Most are designed for use with a GoPro, since even a short handle really helps stability with the small action cameras. The GoPro branded stuff can be pricey, but there are plenty of generic/cheaper options. You may just have to look for mount that will allow you to go from your camera/phone to the GoPro mount.

Thank you. I have the app. I will look for that.

On amazon right now. Thanks!

I know a lot of people don't agree, but I don't have a problem with the idea of selfie sticks, even though I've never even owned one. I can understand how people would not want to hand a phone or camera worth several hundred dollars over to strangers in a theme park or in a foreign country. As long as people are aware of their surroundings with them, there is nothing more "selfish" about them than having others take your photos for you. But at DLR they are not allowed, especially because they were becoming a safety hazard on rides (shut down California Screamin more than once). Glad you figured out something that works for you.

There were too many photos of people doing stupid things on rides for them to continue allowing them in the parks. All of a sudden 3 foot arms became 6 foot arms, and people could reach show elements they were never supposed to touch. Once I saw those photos, I knew it would be ending. When Disney wants to get serious about something, they can.

Agreed. That's why I said they shut it down because they became safety hazards on rides. Makes sense to have them banned there.

What about those of us who answered throughly AND offered opinions? ;) j/k

And my opinion was given mainly so people knew I'm not biased towards them and therefore giving wrong info about extendable vs not. Not to get at you.

Yet people have been doing it for ages.

Doing it at Disney is as safe as doing it in a vegas casino. You're on camera everywhere and the thief will be caught.

Plus doing selfies with the screen side camera is yielding worse pictures than having someone else take it. The good camera is generally on the other side. When you can see yourself you're using the lesser camera.

People urging asking others to help are also trying to do people a favor by getting better (in every way) pictures.

If you're using a cell phone for photos, ask a teenage girl. They really are the experts. People are always asking me because I carry a nice DLSR. But if it's a phone, I always hand it off to my teenage daughter.

I never worry about handing my nice camera to someone at Disney. It's not like they have a getaway car parked close by. ;)

I really didn't have an issue with your answer. It was actually very helpful.
I know this is a public message board but it just makes me feel hesitant about asking anything because someone is going to come along and give a snippy answer without anything helpful to add to the conversation. Your answer was in no way snippy.
