How does the self cleaning feature work? My oven really needs to be cleaned and I've never done it before. I also lost my stupid owner's manual. I have every other manual that you can think of except my oven. Does all the dirt and grime just burn off and disappear or will I have to wipe it out when it's done?

Self cleaning works by blasting the goo with very high heat. There is probably a lock on the door that you move to the CLEAN position and a setting on the temperature dial (or display) for cleaning. I think that the cycle is timed and will stop automatically.

There are usually some ashes on the bottom that I have to wipe out, but it comes up really easy

Well, every oven is different but you will probably have to set a start time and either how many hours or an end time. If it is really dirty, set it for about 2 hours. I usually do about 1 1/2 hours. It will smell some so be prepared. You might also see some flames in there if there is any really baked on stuff, sugary stuff mostly. Take the racks out before you clean it. When it is done and cool enough to unlock the door you will have some white powdery stuff in there that you will have to wipe out but nothing major, just a few spots where the really dirty stuff was. I use a paper towel because it is soot and will stain a dish towel.

Another thought, if you go online to the stove manufactures website they probably have the owners manual in a pdf file there that you can either look up the info or print off a new one.

I have to wipe mine out but there is only a little bit of ash residue on the bottom and sides. My steps are:
1. Set the dials to clean.
2. Set the start and stop timers. I usually let it run for about 3 hours or so.
3. Move the lock handle into the lock position.

My stove gets very warm when I clean it so if you have little ones around, be aware.

You can probably look up the owners manual on the internet for your particular range.

Good Luck.

Guess we were posting at the same time. :sunny:

My oven has a "clean" button. My manual says to remove the racks first. Just push the clean button--the oven will lock. I believe in my oven, the whole process takes about 3 hours. I then wipe up the ashes that may be left.

Here are some tips.
1. do it on a nice day...it sometimes gets stinky...you'll wanna be able to open up windows to air the place out.
2. remove your racks. I forgot to do that...and now mine aren't all shiney and pretty anymore...but a dull silver.

Thanks everyone! Very helpful. I probably would have left the racks in without thinking. :rotfl: Mine is just a button, so I assume I push it and it will lock automatically and take care of everything. Thanks for warning me about the flames too, that probably would have scared me. I actually tried looking it up online but I need to enter my model number and can't even find that.

You mean "self-cleaning" doesn't "clean it yourself"??? I'm gonna have to talk to my DW. :teeth:

:) I have a "self cleaning oven" too. I clean it myself with Easy Off (which really does work, btw!).

Well I took my rack out and pushed the "clean" button. It actually told me to remove racks :rotfl: and then push another button to start it. It automatically locked it and set the timer at 3 hours. It is a bit stinky, but it's a really nice day today, so I opened the back door. The smoke alarm already went off once of course, right outside the sleeping baby's room  . I have the vent and the ceiling fan running so hopefully that won't happen again.

Your model number and serial number are probably on a tag along the door someplace. If not there it will be on the back of the stove, so the next time you pull it out to clean under the stove, check there :rotfl2: .

I always start mine right before I go to bed because it gets super stinky and I can't stand to be downstairs while it's cleaning.

I leave my racks in. I don't mind that they lose their luster. Better to have dull racks than to have to scrub them, IMO

DH called me one day at work and said I am going to clean the oven. He insisted he didn't need to take the racks out. They became dull, but also pans didn't slide on them as well as before.

Hey you told me it was going to get hot. What's a girl to do? :rotfl:

Well what's the point of that!? So it automatically set the timer for 3 hours. The hours are now up but it's still locked for cooling. Who the heck knows how long that's going to take. I figured the 3 hours included the cooling off period. Hmmph.

Please make sure there is no grease in the bottom of your oven when you hit that button.

A year ago this christmas eve, we had a visit from the big red truck because my oven caught on fire "cleaning"...
