Has anyone seen the Mary Poppins show? We have tickets to one of the traveling shows and I would be interested to hear your opinion. I know the actual shows on Broadway are excellent productions but I would like to hear any reports of those who've seen the traveling show.

Does it stick closely to the movie? Do they add any songs or scenes that were NOT in the original movie? How enjoyable was the production you saw? I guess an easy test would be: Did you leave the theater singing the songs with a smile on your face? :)

(Sorry if this isn't the correct board, I wasn't sure which one to use and I only post on the Theme Parks board usually.)

We brought our kids to see it in Ft Lauderdale. It was quite a production...I'm sure that the effects were the same as what you see on Broadway. I think the songs were all the same...I don't remember anything that was not in the movie. We all enjoyed it...the singing and dancing were fabulous. There were a few slow parts (same as in the movie) and my kids got a little antsy (they were 7 and 4) but my kids are like that. Overall it was a great time and well worth it, I think.

Saw it in Cincy. Show was very enjoyable. Chimney Sweep scene is outstanding and the best scene of the show.

Actually going to see it in NYC in a few weeks.Disney VIsa was running a special on tickets

Awesome show! I think there were a few things added that weren't in the movie. One scene where Mr Bank's former nanny returns, and another where children go to a candy shop. Some scenes from movie aren't included, like the one where they visit the uncle and sing the song about laughing. At least one new song that I recall - Practically Perfect in Every Way. We were 5 adult women seeing it and we all loved it!

Took DGrD(7) to the show in Philly 2 weeks ago and we loved it. It did follow the movie overall, but there were other story lines from the book - Mary leaves right before intermission and Mr. Bank's 'mean' nanny arrives to straighten out the children. She is a pretty major part of the 2nd half of the show. Also there were quite a few songs not from the movie, but the major movie songs were all there. Excellent cast - tremendous talent - we were 1st row 1st balcony and didn't see any wires for flying, so I had to warn DGrD that Mary might not fly across the room as she had seen her do in a special about the Broadway show.
***SPOILER ALERT ***
At the very end she did lift off - flying right towards us as she crossed the audience below - I was holding back tears watching the stunned, awed reaction of my DGrD - she was so thrilled!! A show I don't think she'll soon (if ever) forget.:goodvibes Enjoy!
PS: Yes, we sang on the way home until she fell asleep for the rest of the ride.

The Disney movie, I thought, was much happier than the broadway show. (It's one of my favorites) I found the scene of the firing of Mr. Banks very "dark". And the songs "Brimstone and Treacle", "Practically Perfect in Every Way" and the tea scene are not in the movie version. The stage production is very clever, however, and I did enjoy it, --but it is not exactly the Disney movie version.

I saw it in Omaha and enjoyed it. As others have said it is a little different from the movie, but then what is ever exactly the same!

The live show has several major new songs, dance numbers, and key story scenes that were written expressly for the Broadway version (and now, Road Show.)

I saw it a few weeks ago in Philly with DD6. I thought it was really outstanding. The only thing I did not care for the "Brimstone and Treacle" scene. Like others have said there are a few new songs as well, and a few deletions from the movie. The effects were great and "Step in Time" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" were my favorite parts. DD hid her eyes a little bit at the scene where the toys come to life but she thought it was great overall.

I saw it twice when it came to my city...and Step in Time was the best part of the whole show.

Just saw it last Sunday night in Columbus and greatly enjoyed it. She still flys - 3 times... still pulls the tricks from her bag - and etc... numbers, singing and dancing didn't disappoint. I think the traveling show is worth seeing just as much as it would be on Broadway!

We saw it in Minneapolis and LOVED it. We ranged from 6-60 in ages. We bought the CD and the kids still sing along with it. I agree w/ the chinmney sweep scene. Very, very good!!

I didn't enjoy it. At all. However, it's coming back to our area next year and we will go see it again to give it another chance. We watched the movie the night before and I think that was a huge mistake on my part. She was definitely not Julie Andrews and he was not Dick Van **** and I think I was expecting more of the movie (like the other Disney Broadway shows). I left feeling a bit disappointed but we are going to give it another try.

1) We saw it in London.
2) I think it is a pretty good production.
3) I agree with the previous PP, the Chimney Sweep scene is cool.
4) You will enjoy yourself.

I haven't seen the stage production, but this would be my worry. MP is my favorite live-action Disney movie, and one of my all time favorite movies from any genre. To me, the movie is, er, uh...practically perfect in every way. I'm not sure I'd like the stage production no matter how good it is. Props to Juliebug for giving it another chance though, sometimes you're just not in the right frame of mind for something.:earsboy:

I'm going to move this to the theme parks community board.

Thanks for the responses. I prefer to know any changes ahead of time so I'll be prepared for the additions that aren't in the movie.

Is the scene where they go through the chalk sidewalk painting into the animated world (carousel, fox race, penguin waiters) depicted at all? How successfully?

edit: if they have supercal.... song they must have a least part of the animated scene? I really like the penguin waiters and the big weeping willow tree for tea for Burt and Mary - do they have anything showing that?

Sorry, Rhonna, but that is one of the scenes that is different - the park/chalk painting scene involved several 'living' statues from the park and when they go through the picture (I don't think that's what they did, though) they end up at a crazy candy store that fits back in at the end in the George Banks childhood part of the story. It was still bright, energetic and enjoyable - but certainly not the country fair/penguin scene from the movie.
I was most hoping for the laughing scene with Uncle Bert - that's my fav scene in the movie.
