Security check points and hair pins

I am (althought that might change) planning on getting a ponytail put in my hair for our trip to Disney in a couple of weeks. This is so I won't have to mess with my hair while I'm there. The ponytail is held in place with hair pins. My question is do hair pins set off the metal detectors?

No, I fly with hair clips all the time and I have never had them set off the sensors. I also walk through with a watch on sometimes and have not had that set them off.

I've also had no problem with pony tails or barettes going through security.

Just be sure not to take your pennies and quarters for the pressed penny machines in rolls. Yes, I admit it, I was stupid enough to do that once.

I always take off my barrette before security and put it in my carryon, otherwise I beep.

I once had a barrette in my carry on and security pulled me aside to check through everything in that carryon. After standing there for what felt like at least 10 minutes while the guard checked everything using large tweezers and wearing rubber gloves I decided to leave all hair clips home the next time I flew. It wasn't a big deal, I mean I knew I didn't have anything dangerous in my luggage but still felt kinda dumb standing there forever. Don't know why they wear the gloves.

I can probably explaing the gloves. You're touching a person whom you don't who has what and they don't know what you have. I think the gloves are just a precaution.

Why not? All you have to do is keep them in a purse for the x ray machine or put in a separate bin for x ray screening.

I doubt that it was a barette that they were seeking - I have all types of hairclips in my various bags; after 68,000+ miles this year I have rarely had my bag checked at all. Once I forgot that I had left nail scissors in my carryon; another time it was my Mickey head scrapbooking scissors that I bought for someone (TSA let me keep those - they can't even cut paper!)

They may just have seen something that they couldn't identify, or it was simply that your number came up.

Oops I forgot to mention that the guard did comment that the hair clip must have been what they saw when it went through the scanner. It was one of the larger hair clips with the metal in back that holds your hair secure. I hope you know what kind I mean, not sure how to describe it better.
