Security Camera on your street?

Only if they have sound as well so they can record exactly how loud my neighbor's ducks are.

The constitution states that one of the main goals of the government is to protect the public. You see this all the time via street signs, traffic lights, mandates on safe public and private transportation, safe water standards, etc...

I'd like to know what freedom would be infringed upon by the installation of cameras in public locations? Is there an inherent sense of privacy via your comings and goings while in public? I don't think so.

I think it's quite a leap to say that this could lead to them stopping you from reading your Bible.

here is a hypothetical:

suppose you belong to a radical political party. you do not advocate violence, but an overthrow of the government through purely political/constitutional means...grassroots stuff. Your party begins growing in power. You start having meetings, maybe at your house. These cameras are then utilized by a government agency to begin spying on you. you are breaking no laws, but yet your rights are being violated. perhaps they can use this info to hurt you at you job...there are a million possibilities, noe of which I want to experience.

I do agree with you Charade...it would be quite a leap. I still stick with my initial statement...I wouldn't care at all if camera's were installed.

The process you describe as "overthrow the government..." is pretty much what can (possibly) happen every election cycle.

I'd still like to know what rights are being violated by the government watching the comings and goings of people while there are in public.

Is Room 101 a private residence or a public location?

They're fine with me, Con.

Here in Chicago, the police department is deploying many high tech camera/sound-sensing systems in the city. I wish they were everywhere.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/07/05/crime.prevention.ap/

Chicago murder rate has dropped from 923 in '94 to 445 in '04. The rate from '03 to '04 was dramatic, much attributed to these systems. The drug folks, the gang bangers, etc don't like them, but I and many others do.

so, when they train those cameras on your house, you're cool with that?

Well, I for one would like to have camera's on my street! I have a drug dealer two houses down one way, and across the street, they have "after-hours" parties which start at 2:00 am and go until dawn! They do drugs there and drink so much I don't know how they drive away in the morning. And yes, they do drive away in the morning. We've contacted the police and they patrol the street, but unless they see something in particular there's nothing they can do. You try sleeping when there's people outside all early morning long: smoking, drinking, talking (albeit as softly as a drunk thinks he can) and peeing in my driveway! Give me the cameras!

Alot of people are talking about the Security Cameras in London England. They are supose to be helping in the war against terror and crime.

How would you like to have a security camera recording and monitoring the activities on the street that you live on? It could keep track of the goings on in your neighborhood and help in the war against crime and terror right in your backyard.

Though it would also help officals monitor when you are home, when you come and go, who visits your home, who your friends are, what hours you keep, how often you mow the lawn, etc.

So, would you like a security camera on your street?

Anyone watching such a camera on my street would be incredibly bored! :rotfl: Besides that, I have my 95 year old neighbor across the street who monitors EVERYTHING going on. All the officials would have to do is ask her about what's going on in the neighborhood and they'll find out more than they could possibly have ever wanted to know, in great detail!

Since there doesn't seem to be any crime or terrorism on my little cul-de-sac of 7 houses, I think the government could spend their money a lot more wisely and efficiently in other ways.

I have no problem with it as long as it is used properly.
