Second time in a week that DD had to evacuate her dorm!

I guess this is probably why the only heating items allowed in all of the dorms are curling irons/straighteners and blow dryers. You're not allowed to have a microwave, hot plate, coffee pots...

DD walked up 15 floors and was able to catch an elevator to go up the last 8. She joked that she got her work out done for the day.
:)

Someone mentioned renter insurance. I never really thought about that. I'll have to call State Farm in the morning and see if they offer such a policy for dorms or if her stuff would be covered under our home owners policy.

It's covered under your homeowner's policy but I would have anything expensive or electronic listed separately on the policy because then you don't pay a deductible and the coverage is better. We have DS's computer equipment scheduled on our policy.

State Farm has a personal articles policy that would work too.

Really, no microwaves?
Microwaves are OK at our daughter's college, but no heating element devices (hot plate, toaster oven, coffee maker).

Here's an odd "prohibited item" for you. One of my friends went to Asbury College in Kentucky and in their dorm TVs were OK, but not refrigerators. In the winter residents (the ones on upper floors) would keep food items fresh by putting them out on the ledges outside their windows. One of the guys on his floor snuck a cubical dorm frig in and disguised it as a TV... complete with a fake screen (blank), knobs, and a set of rabbit ears. He got busted when an RA caught him coming back from the restroom with the ice cube tray!

My first thought was does she go to Central Ct. State University. ;) They had an actual dorm fire that started in the utility room and went through the roof. It happened to be in DS#2's old dorm. I guess its more common than I thought.

That was my first thought, too. They weren't letting anyone back into that dorm yesterday and last night because there was too much smoke in the air. One of my friend's daughter is a freshman and living in that dorm, I guess she was pretty shaken up by it yesterday.

I dont' EVER remember a fire alarm going off other than for a nomal fire drill in the dorms while I was in college. Of course, small all women's college, small dorms, not so many wild pranks, no fraternities.

Standard Cautionary Note: Remember that due differing state laws and state regulatory agencies the details of insurance products often differ from state to state, even when sold by the same company. What works for State Farm homeowner's policy in Minnesota, may or may not work for a State Farm customer here. "Your results may vary." Talk to your local agent.

I found this out when I was told by someone on-line that since I had State Farm I needed a rider for my camera equipment. Concerned, I talked to my SF agent and he assured me that there was no limit on my coverage for camera equipment. I countered that this friend of mine was a SF customer and said his agent told him he did need it. After he found out that my friend lived in another state, it all made sense to my agent and he explained the situation to me.

I'll buy that, seeing as mine was an all-male hall at a Big Ten school... 'nuf said. :)

Ahhh, memories...
This is definitely normal college behavior. Tell her to wait for finals week in December when it's near zero out and some jerk will set the alarms off four times during the night when you have an 8am exam. By the final alarm, I was so tired and sleeping so sound, I just added the alarm to my dream that I was getting up and going outside again.
My roommate had to keep shaking and hitting me to get me up and moving. And when we left the room, there was smoke in the hall. The jerk(s) finished off their night of fun by setting the paper recycling bin on fire, which spread into the ceiling tiles. We didn't get back into the room for well over an hour. The dude was lucky no one figured out who he was cause the mob was ready to kill someone.

ISO standard contract has coverage for items away from home-the differences will be in how much is covered-ISO, I think, is about 15% of the personal articles coverage on your policy so if you have 100,000, $15,000 would be covered away from home. THIS is what will be different on individual state policies.

First year in college my mom told me to pack a flashlight. I thought she was crazy. After the first fire alarm went off, at night and cut out our lights, I was calling home to apologize to her and tell her I was going out to buy a flashlight. They happen often.

My Chi straightener does not have an automatic shut off. I bought DD another straightener to take with that does have one. That's the thing I worry about - the straightener. Not the microwave.

DD can't have a coffee pot or hot plate either. Microwaves, yes. Go figure.

There's one microwave on each floor in a common area.

Another odd one is that they're not allowed to have floor lamps even if they're regular bulbs. The problem is that there's no ceiling light and their desks are not near the door so they've been keeping the light on in one of the closets instead.

No. She goes to IL State. They alarm on Friday was for a real fire in the basement near one of the water heaters.
