Hi,
We're going to Seattle this summer. With restaurant.com having the 50% off now, I was wondering if there are any good restaurants near the Westin listed. Thanks for the info. :)

We live near Seattle and are traveling to FL next week :)

I checked the list at restaurants.com...

I would recommend that you buy an entertainment book. If you have one for your area, you can buy a Seattle book for like $10 mid year. In it, you will find fabulous 2 for 1 coupons for excellent restaurants. The Top of the Inn, near the Seatac airport, The Salish Lodge which sits atop the Snoqualamie falls, lots and lots of coupons. We don't do to many of the touristy things - but there are plenty of coupons for those things too - ferry rides to B.C., I think you'll find Seattle Science Center coupons...

Oh...and while you're here...stop at the XXX off the 405 in Issaquah. Bill Gates eats there ;) (Burgers are literally about 10 inches across!)

Enjoy your trip!

tarheelmjfan, my family will be spending 3 days in Seattle this summer, before we head out for an Alaska cruise. I, too, have been trying to get some information regarding restaurants and activities that will not break the bank, so I am bumping this in hopes we get more information. BTW, we are booked at the Westin too! We are not renting a car, so I am trying to find things to do, and restaurants to try, in the downtown area.

chucknjulie,
Thanks for the info. :) I have already purchased the entertainment book. I haven't made it through the entire book yet, because it's huge. :earboy2: Any suggestions for restaurants in the downtown area, that are included in the book? I have already found at least three things that we had planned to do. It will pay for itself many times over. I just wish we were a family of 4, so I could buy 2 books & get twice the savings, like we did when we took my niece with us to New Orleans. :p Greedy, I know. :teeth:

blanq,
No rental car for us either. DH drives all over the state daily, & refuses to drive on vacation. We are hoping to take a couple of tours. I'm researching to see which ones will pick us up at the hotel. I'm afraid I may be getting ahead of myself though. Things have been so busy around here & I have to leave today to go out of town. I haven't actually booked the cruise yet, because I want to have more time to sit down with a travel agent and know exactly what I'm booking. I plan to book next week. I'm now hearing that Princess limits the number of children allowed, & we have a 13 yo. Hopefully, we'll be able to book with no problem. :wizard: I'll keep you informed. Who knows, we may be there at the same time. :)

I live in the Seattle area (about 30 miles south), but also tend to avoid a lot of the touristy things... I rarely go into downtown Seattle. WARNING: downtown Seattle is a difficult place to navigate in a car unless you really know your way around!!! Lots of one-way streets, expensive parking, etc. - avoid it at all costs!!!! On the other hand, it is really quite easy to navigate on foot (there are lots of hills!) AND the buses are free in the downtown area (if you're unsure your destination is in the "free zone" just ask your bus driver - they're very friendly!). I'm not exactly sure where the Westin is located downtown, but I'm sure you'll be within walking distance of most of what you want to do downtown.

The waterfront is a wonderful place to just wander along - start south and work your way north. The aquarium is located on the waterfront, lots of nice shops, etc. We would always go to Ivar's (a seafood, fish & chips kind of place which is very famous locally) located along the waterfront - more towards the south end. Ivar's has a take out window which is where we always got our food and then either just walked around and ate, or sat at the outdoor tables - they do have a sit-down restaurant which is more expensive of course, but still quite reasonable. Really good fish & chips and yummy salmon chowder!!! Another restaurant option for the waterfront is The Spaghetti Factory, which is located at the north end of the waterfront. It can get quite crowded, but it's good food, lots of it, and reasonable prices.

You will of course have to wander through Pike Place Market. This is wonderful! I still will occasionally come into downtown Seattle just to come here! It's lots of little shops and vendors - you'll find fish markets, vegetables, flowers, craft items, antiques - all kinds of stuff! You will also find lots of little food places. I don't know specific names - you can just kind of wander around and follow your nose; I've had all kinds of wonderful, different foods here: sticky buns (cinnamon rolls w/ carmel & pecans), hum bow (soft doughy bun filled w/ bbq pork), piroshki (a russian "pocket" sandwich w/ different fillings). It's a fun place to shop and nibble your way through!

Westlake Center is a very nice downtown shopping center. It has great stores (different!) and the top floor has a food court with some good selections. You can sit and eat on the top floor, and watch the monorail (if it's going yet - after it caught fire last year! oops!) But I've always had good food here - it's NOT typical "mall" food! Good choices and quite reasonable - it has something for everyone. Westlake Center is probably quite close to the Westin and is smack dab in the middle of retail heaven; there's some great shopping in downtown Seattle - it's fun just to wander around and window shop!

There are a couple of specific restaurants I can recommend which are located on Capitol Hill - just east of the downtown area. Mongolian Grill is really good food and different: you pay one price and it's all you can eat - you get your dish, load it with your choices (different meats, different veggies, different sauces - it's your own creation), take it to the "grill," and they cook it right there in front of you. And Broadway Grill is fabulous - good food (my favorite is the turkey meatloaf - yum!!!) and very reasonable; they also make the best darn drinks (my favorite is their Long Island Iced Tea - which is the best I've EVER had!).

The Seattle area has a plethora of Asian restaurants - ALL kinds - Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese. I absolutely love asian food and really enjoy that we have such a broad variety available to choose from. If you like Asian food - ask around and I'm sure you will be directed to some good places.

I will also recommend you avoid eating at the restaurant located in the top of the Space Needle (don't know its name!) - I've never heard anyone with anything good to say about this place: overpriced and yucky food! That's all I've ever heard it! It's more a tourist trap than anything else.

Anyway - that's my little bit of advice! I don't frequent downtown Seattle and I don't eat at a lot of restaurants in that area (obviously!). But - I did work there for 9 years (that was about 8 years ago, though!) so I have some familiarity with the area.... I hope it helps! You will find most people quite friendly, though - so don't hesitate to ask around when you get into town! Seattle has a lot of character and is quite down-to-earth - it's a big city with a small-town feel. You'll have fun - ENJOY! :D

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if EeyoreLives and I live in the same town. ITA with everything that has been said...horrible trying to navigate those streets... The Westin is right downtown though - so you'll be within easy walking distance of plenty.

There is a place called the "EMP" - Experience Music Project at the Seattle Center (which is where the Space Needle is)...I avoided it, partly because it is the ugliest monstrosity I have ever seen...but I was able to check it out on a special deal and it is pretty cool. There are sound studios that you can go into and it helps you through playing electric guitars, drums, etc and will take pics of your group as though you are a band. My kids had a blast there...although if your child is going "alone" - it might not be quite as much fun ?? Hopefully you'll have 2 for 1's cuz full price is pretty pricey - and then downstairs is a Science Fiction museum...lots of Star Wars stuff (Paul Allens personal collection) as well as different things from science fiction books and movies back through several decades. They have one of the first Star Trek scripts there. You have to be "into" Terminator, Star Wars, and/or Trekky stuff to fully appreciate it all, I think.

I have been up in the Space Needle restaurant a few times. Dinner was just o.k. - breakfast 4 years ago was unbelievably incredible, however, they have since changed mgmt so no more 5 course breakfasts (and I don't think there are 2 for 1's for them anymore either! ) I would recommend riding the glass elevator to the top though, you will get views that you can't get anywhere else. I think it is $14. In the entertainment book, you'll see coupons that say they are in the "Center House" that is at the Seattle Center. You'll find Quincy's burgers, Pizza Hut, Orange Julius...lots.

If you can swing it, I would schedule a walk on trip on one of the ferries. If you can make it to the San Juans Islands , you'll never forget it. Truly one of the most beautiful area's I have ever seen. You may very well see a whale on your way. The ferries are none too special, but they are o.k.

Down south close to a half hr down I-5 in Federal Way, 6 Flags recently bought "Enchanted Village/Wild Waves Amusement Park". My teens (I have 4) say they would recommend it.

You will see Mt Rainier from where you are staying, but it's quite a distance from downtown...if you are planning to be in town for a while, and like hiking, there are spectacular day hikes and plenty of tour bus rides up...

I have eaten at Ivars on the water, usually I buy at the counter and eat outside. The Melting Pot is a fun fondue place but it will break the bank. OH! You have a coupon for Salty's on Alki... I highly recommend that you USE IT. It will be a bus ride, but you will get to sit and eat on the water - across from downtown. It can be pricey - but VERY good!
