Hi, just wondering is there a way to find out if the seat/seats next to you on a flight are booked prior to boarding?

Most airlines now allow you to check seat maps on their website, so just pretend as though you are making a reservation for your flights and click on the seat maps. It will show you which seats are available and which ones have been assigned.

Some airline websites let you select your seats online. When the seating chart comes up you will see what seats are already filled.

Does anyone know if this can be done with Northwest?

I couldn't find it on their website.

Anywhere else to look?

Thanks!

Ahhh....good ole Northworst.

Here's what you do:

Go to www.itn.com
Click on 'FLIGHTS'
Pretend you are making a reservation and enter the details from your flight or times that are quite similar. Select 'Northwest' from preferred airlines and click 'SEARCH FOR AVAILABLE FLIGHTS'

When the different flight options come up on the next screen, click the radio button on the one that matches your itinerary.

On the next screen the flight itinerary that you selected will come up.
On the bottom of the screen, there is a button that says 'SELECT SEATS'. Click it. This will give you a reasonably accurate idea of what seats are taken. First class and exit row seats often are shown as taken when they are in fact not, but are assigned at the airport.

Also with Northwest they will be more than happy to tell you over the phone. Just call their 800 number. I did this yesterday (and on our previous trip) as we have 3 seperate ressies for the 4 of us and I wanted to make sure we were seated together. They assign seats starting 90 days in advance.

I have found out with NWA when making an online reservation, that you can go on line 90 days out and pick your own seats also. Just go to reservations and click on your itinerary and then scroll down until you see - choose your seats for this flight. They have elite seats with star that are available but if you are not an elite traveler the system comes back and says your seat will be assigned at check in. You can choose any other available seat but they do block the exit rows as if they were all ready chosen. 90 days out NWA will pick seats for you, and if you're unlucky like me they give you the very last row. But I changed that. Rather be up front but will try for that on check in.
You would need to pick your return seats later than your outgoing seats as they can't be picked until 90 days out either.
