Ok, I bought some Sea bands but I am skeptical about them. I do want to give them a try. My question is this - if I start to feel queasy with the Seabands on, can I then take the dramamine or bonine, or will it not take effect soon enough?

Thanks

you have to take bonine or dramamine BEFORE you go on what ever will make your stomch do loop-de-loops.
I havent had much contact with sea bands.
I always use bonine and have never had a huge problem...as for it making you sleepy...I find that as long as I keep going I'm fine...as soon as I stop...I need a nap...

stay with the meds

I use the Bonine every time I fly/boat etc...It works great and the only time I find that it really makes me drowsy is when I have a few drinks with it. :drinking1

I take bonine to fly & if I'm going to do a Coaster Park (Ceder Point, Hershey etc) I no longer get remotely sleepy from it. I think I am used to it now.

Bonine & Draminine take 1/2 - 1 hour to take effect. I personally wouldn't take the chance if you know you have motion sickness issues. I don't believe in getting sick on vacation if I don't have to.

Just going to add here (and I'm sure to sound like a broken record)...

MythBusters on the Discovery Channel did an episode on sea sickness cures, etc... they tested sea bands, even the mre expensive watch apparatus ($100 I believe) it had no impact - they tested the otc meds, some did an ok job... the surprising cure - Ginger!! They didnt think that would work at all - and they felt it did better than the bonine/dramamine!!

You can buy ginger ale, ginger snap cookies, crystalized ginger candy, ginger altoids, and at the health food stores (like GNC at the malls) ginger capsules (which I use!)

I'll second the ginger cure! Bonine/Dramamine both knocked me out on our first cruise (I slept through 2 of our 4 days on the cruise!), but ginger pills from our local vitamin store kept me motion-sick free on our entire second cruise.

There are also patches you can ask your doctor for (Rx only) that you wear behind your ear. They also worked really well for me, but I can only wear them for 3 days max before one of the side effects, blurry vision, bothers me too much to continue.

Seriously, I don't travel without ginger anymore. It's great even for an upset tummy from boats, cars, coasters, and overeating. :thumbsup2

maybe I'll try ginger this time...does the bottle of caplets smell when you open them? I cant get past that vitamin smell.

I'm assuming that you swallow the caplets...chewing the bonine grosses me out too...I have ot chase it with a good amount of water...eww

IMO seabands and ginger are very mild motion sick remedies. I tried both when I was pregnant and they didn't work all the great for me. Is there anything that you can do to test them? I could just get in the car with someone else driving and read a couple sentences out of a magazine and know if it works.

My mother got DH the Sea Bands before our honeymoon 11 years ago. He still wears them. I tell him that it is all in his head, but as long as it helps him, I don't care!

I am going to give the ginger a try for him. He used to love TOT, but since it went to multiple drops, it makes him sick. MS, and Star Tours gets him too.

Bonine has a less drowsy formula that works well for me. The pills are very small and should not be too hard to chew then wash down with a liquid. Whoever is having a drink with anti nausea meds should be taking Dis transportation. Sorry the nurse in me has to be careful.

The ginger sounds like it might be a good idea, but I am a bit skeptical about something like that. I guess I could try it out. Eat some sushi, and the ginger they give you and then have my father in law drive us around town (he drives like a lunatic) and see how I do.

For those of you that take ginger, do you take one in the AM and it lasts all day? Do you need to take multiple caplets? As someone mentioned before, do they need to be chewed? This sounds like something I'm going to try ahead of time...but sounds very promising(heard of it before, but the mythbusters thing has kicked it up a notch).

What I use is prescription. I use the travel patch. I just stick it behind one ear on the bone around the ear and in three days take it off and put another one on the opposite ear. The bad side to this is that my dh has to read all the menus to me because my vision is blurrly. I also become very thirsty. If however I do get slighly dizzy it usually last only a few minutes and is over. :cool1: :goodvibes I can enjoy the rest of my day. :goodvibes :cool1:

I saw that same show, I haven't tried it yet but did buy the ginger capsules. I am going to visit a good friend in two weeks, I will try them then. I will be taking the bonine with me if it dosen't work.

I highly recommend using the ginger capsules if available rather than ginger ale or ginger candies, simply because a lot of them are artificial ginger flavoring and have very little to no actual ginger in them at all.

Jamie and Adam rule. :) Not that you couldn't tell from my sig.

Dramamine has a less-drowsy formula that works great!! I get car sick very easily, and if I take regular Dramamine, I go right to sleep, but the less-drowsy formula doesn't effect me at all! :thumbsup2

Yup, we are a Bonine family too. We never have a problem using it or getting drowsy...you just have to pay attention to the dosage. I never even thought about using Sea bands! I'll save them for my cruise some day. Helen

Mythbusters be darned! That watch apparatus thingy was the best $79 I ever spent. Half the time it's loaned out to family members who agree whole-heartedly. I like it becasue it works quickly and without any medication side-effects.

Just wanted to let you know that I used the sea bands and my kids used bonine. My husband used nothing. Husband was fine, always is. I was a little queezy, but nothing horrible. Kids were fine. The bonine didnt make them tired either. So on the way home I will be doing Bonine with the kids. I didnt feel horrible but I could still sense the 'sensation' in my stomach. Dont like that!

I'm also a believer in the ginger. My DH gets motion sickness easily so did not do any of the motion rides with us on past trips. He tried ginger on our last trip. When he didn't get sick on the plane (which is common), he tried space mountain & thunder mountain railroad. No problems (in the past this would have had him sick for hours). Since then, he has taken them for a local boat cruise and my girls have used it for the State Fair rides.

I read somewhere you should take it twice a day starting the day before. That's what we did and will continue to do. We started the day before our flight and continued until we got home from the trip. We bought ginger root tablets in the vitamin section of Walmart. They are not chewable. You swallow them.

I was a little skeptical until I heard about the MythBusters show as well. I still wasn't sure if there really was such a show. After our trip, I actually saw the episode that tested them and where it showed that ginger worked.
