xD cards a mainly used in Olympus, Fuji and Toshiba.

SD are the more widely used of the two card types and are used most other cameras apart from Sony, who use their own memory stick cards.

The other main type of card is the compact flash card which you now only really see in digital SLR cameras.

SD cards seem to be the cheaper card compared to xD.

Not sure if there are any real techical pros and cons between the xD or SD cards though. The SD card does have a small write protect switch that prevents accidental over-writing of photos.
