We'll be taking our first cruise on June 5. Our 15 year old DS is a certified open-water SCUBA diver and wants to dive at both Cayman and Cozumel. We can't book through Disney, though, because they won't allow him to dive without a parent (who also has to be a certified diver to even ride on the boat with him). Has anyone out there used any other dive facilities, and been pleased, at either Cayman or Cozumel? Love this web-site!!

I can't help you with real life experience diving on cruises in these places but we've had friends who have sworn on Captain Marvin's in Grand Cayman. Here is their website if you want to look at it...they are a great operation (we've used them in Grand Cayman while NOT on a cruise and they were great but we also didn't have a 15 year old)

I understand exactly what you are saying. My son was 12 when he did his first DC and was AOW, Nitrox. Disney said no so we booked our own and have ever since. In GC we dove with Eden Rock once and that was nice and easy. We did a boat dive - 2 tank and than dove at their shore. We also dove with Bob Sotos at GC. They did a fine job. Better offshore reef selection than Eden Rock. We walked to both operators and had plenty of time.

Our trip for Coz was cancelled due to rough seas (12ft).

A good place to start with picking an operator is www.scubadiving.com. I have found they have most of the operators listed and the reviews are good.

If you take your own gear, which we do, be prepared that is a hassel to rinse and dry your gear on the ship. They have no place to do it except on deck or in your room. Hauling dive equipment is why we use Cat 6 rooms.

In Cozumel we went with Eagle Ray Divers. They were great. 2 of our party were newly certified, 1 was experienced. All 3 gave great marks for the safety and experience of the dive master. The rest of us (5 non-divers) had a great snorkel experience while the divers did their thing. Very nice people, very good communication and reasonalbe cost! Also nice was the size of the group. Max 10 or 12 on the boat.

HIGHLEY RECOMMEND!

I will be happy to answer any questions.

Rellingtwin-

Hello! How did you contact Eagle Ray? I emailed them a couple of months ago requesting additional info from them, as we were looking at them to dive with in Sept. I haven't heard a peep back! I did say, "our trip isn't for a few months, so your normal 48 hr reply isn't needed, so no rush!" But you would think a month or two later, I would have heard something! I did say this would be our first ocean dive, so perhaps they "lost" the email, because us newbies tend to be a bit less fun, I am sure:worried:

Let me know! Gotta get some dives under our belt!

Jill and Tim, I would e-mail them again. I booked with them 2X. Once when we were scheduled to go on the Western, and were diverted due to a hurricaine, and then again when we tried and were able to make the ports the following year. Both times I got speedy responces form ERD. I did get an e-mail from them a few months ago, saying they were having trouble with e-mail. So I would say to try again.
